While born into a wrestling family, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson still had to earn his success. The 51-year-old started slow, but once he built enough confidence, he became an international sensation during WWE’s Attitude Era. Now, he’s a larger-than-life superstar.

Initially, fans were calling for the end of Rocky Maivia. A change was needed, and the former college football star rose to the top of the rankings in WWE after returning from an injury in the 90s. He joined the Nation of Domination, became a champion in The Corporation, and then broke out to become “The Great One.”

From there, his popularity rose, and no matter what he did, fans all over would chant his name. Now, he calls himself "The Final Boss."

Over the years, The Rock has focused on ventures outside of wrestling. He has appeared in various blockbuster movies and is in charge of the XFL. No matter how famous he has gotten, The Rock will never forget where he came from.

What is the status of The Rock now? Here is all you need to know about the WWE icon and where he stands in the pro wrestling world.

Is The Rock retired from pro wrestling?

Though he is no longer a full-time wrestler, The Rock hasn't officially put his WWE career to a close.

The Rock was in and out of WWE in the early 2000s due to his movie career and left for many years in 2004. However, he continued to appear on WWE programming whenever given the opportunity. In 2011, he returned to WWE and competed in matches against CM Punk, John Cena, and the team of The Miz and R-Truth. His last big match was at WrestleMania 29 in 2013, losing the WWE Title against Cena.

He continued to make sporadic appearances in WWE, with his last match post his Cena feud being a six-second win against Erick Rowan at WrestleMania 32 in 2016.

After about four years (2019) away from a WWE ring, The Rock returned in September 2023 to a huge ovation. Earlier that day, he spoke to Pat McAfee about potentially returning to the ring.

“Honestly brother, it’s not the injury that I’m concerned about because that’s just part of it,” The Rock said via People. “It’s just part of the game you sign up for. You get hurt, we all get hurt. That’s just the way it is. It’s not even the schedule, because I can control the schedule to a large degree. Me going back to WWE and wrestling a match, it always comes down to the reason why and what can we create that’s never been done before for the fans.”

The Rock's next match: WWE schedule in 2024

The Rock was rumored to face Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 40 for the Undisputed WWE Universal Title. Part of the legendary Anoaʻi family, the two have only interacted a few times. The Rock did tease fighting Reigns, dubbed “The Head of the Table,” when he returned to Monday Night Raw at the beginning of January 2024.

Plans changed following fan backlash, and The Rock will now team with Reigns. The cousins will face Cody Rhodes and Seth "Freakin'" Rollins on night one of WrestleMania 40 on April 6.

Dubbed "The Final Boss," The Rock's new gimmick is a mix of his regular Rock character and the Hollywood Rock look from the early 2000s. He promises to end Rhodes' quest for gold (Rhodes challenges Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Title on night two).
