Creativity comes at a cost in the WNBA.

To be a lead playmaker is to put yourself in position to make mistakes. And even the league's most gifted creators can fumble the ball every now and then, especially when firing off arrows to a ravenous defense.

In a sport that has become increasingly more defined by tactical nous, defenses that can pester opposition ball-handlers find themselves in position to be quite successful in the league.

For Fever first-year guard Caitlin Clark, such matchups could prove daunting. Not because Clark doesn't have the talent to succeed at the next level — she most certainly does. However, the quality of athletes and quality of defensive scheme is of a higher level than she's ever played against.

Couple that with being handed the keys to an offense that was stagnant at times in 2023, and performances like Clark's debut — where she coughed the ball up with regularity — could litter her early-career calendar.

Most single-game turnovers in WNBA history

Clark captured the enmity of some living room point guards in her regular-season debut, surrendering 10 turnovers against Connecticut's rampant defense. The display gave Clark a piece of WNBA history, albeit a discouraging one: it was the eight-most turnovers accrued in a single game in WNBA history.

Even among WNBA regular season debuts — a notoriously tricky thing to predict — Clark's struggles were paramount. She gave the ball away more than any other debutant in league history and set the Fever's franchise record for most single-game turnovers with her showing against Stephanie White's hawkish side, per ESPN's Alexa Philippou.

It was far from a classic performance from Clark, who struggled under the watchful eye of DiJonai Carrington. Nevertheless, there's good news for those in the Clark camp. Among the list of players to record double-digit turnovers in a single WNBA game is plenty of starlight, including an MVP, a Hall of Famer and countless All-Stars.
