The 2022 summer transfer window is nearly complete and the 2022/23 campaign is firmly underway, but there will be squad needs that arise as the season drags on.

Whether through injury, mismanagement, or other circumstances, top teams will identify midseason needs to strengthen squads and push towards various goals. Other clubs will have players who are looking for a move away, whether to find more minutes, create space from a dust-up, solve a contract dispute, or another reason.

That can create perfect matches around the club landscape as players look for greener pastures.

Often, however, the deals in the winter transfer window don't reach the financial heights of those completed during the summer, as teams are more often filling short-term holes than building for the future. Still, the deals done midseason can often change the course of a club's campaign.

When does the 2023 January transfer window open?

As is the case in most years, the 2023 January transfer window is open in most nations from the start of January to the end of the month.

This year, because January 1 falls on a Sunday, some leagues have altered the schedule slightly to accommodate the calendar quirk and let the biggest days of business fall on a weekday, but others have left it as-is. Other leagues have chosen to work around league fixture changes born from the unique scheduling of the 2022 World Cup, held for the first time in November and December.

Below are the 2023 winter transfer window dates for many of the top European leagues.

In the Premier League, the winter transfer window will close specifically at 11 p.m. BST on January 31.

That deadline is for submitting what is known as a "deal sheet" to the league office for registration, while clubs have an additional two hours to complete all the required paperwork to complete a transfer.

Recap of 2022 January transfer window

Last year, the 2022 winter transfer window brought a flurry of activity.

The most expensive deal of the winter transfer window was the capture of Dusan Vlahovic by Juventus, who signed the striker from Fiorentina in an €81 million deal. Meanwhile, Barcelona spent €55m to secure Ferran Torres from Man City.

The top Premier League capture of the winter transfer window was Liverpool's signing of Luis Diaz for a €47m fee from Portuguese club Porto, while Newcastle United spent €42.1m on Bruno Guimaraes of Lyon. The top intra-Premier League deal was a tie, with Newcastle's splurge of €30 million on Chris Wood of Burnley equalled by Aston Villa's move for full-back Lucas Digne of Everton.

Newcastle, under new Saudi-backed ownership, made a splash in the transfer window, successfully staving off relegation. The Magpies racked up a net spend twice that of any other Premier League club, offloading just over €100m.
