The USWNT's road to another World Cup title wasn't as smooth as many anticipated, and their hopes of a third straight title were ended following a penalty shootout loss to Sweden.

The Round of 16 exit is the earliest USA has ever exited the Women's World Cup. The team had never previously failed to finish any worse than third.

The USWNT's uninspiring 0-0 draw with Portugal in the finale was enough to get the reigning champions through but did little to inspire confidence about their chances the rest of the way. The performance was improved against Sweden, but still the goals did not come.

The team's next match will therefore not be at the Women's World Cup.

When does the USWNT play next?

Had the U.S. defeated Sweden and advanced out of the Round of 16, it would have played Japan on Friday, Aug. 11 in the quarterfinals.

Instead, the Americans were eliminated from the tournament at the earliest point in history. In nine editions, they had never finished worse than third place.

It means their next match will be a friendly against South Africa in Cincinnati in September.

  • Date: Thursday, Sep. 21
  • Time: 5:30 p.m. ET (2:30 p.m. PT)
  • Opponent: South Africa
  • Location: TQL Stadium (Cincinnati, Ohio)
