Ukraine hope to bring home a place in the European Championships for their war-torn nation as they take on Iceland in the League B playoff final of Euro 2024 qualifying.

The match will be played in Wroclaw, Poland thanks to the ongoing hostilities in Ukraine, which have seen Russia barred from UEFA competition for the past year.

The Synio-Zhovti dug deep in the semifinal to squeak past Bosnia & Herzegovina, turning around a late 1-0 deficit with dramatic goals in the 85th and 88th minute.

Iceland also left it later than they'd have liked in their semifinal, making the most of a red card to Israel defender Roy Revivo in the 73rd minute with the match still in the balance. From there, Iceland took over, scoring a pair from Albert Gudmundsson, giving the 24-year-old a hat-trick and seeing his side through by a 4-1 victory.

Both nations fell short of qualification through the conventional method, but are afforded an opportunity to reach the summer tournament in Germany through other means, having put themselves in position to qualify thanks to their performance in League B of the latest UEFA Nations League edition. With a winner required from this match, extra-time and penalties would be necessary should it end in a draw after 90 minutes of regulation play.

Ukraine vs Iceland best bet

  • Pick: Both teams to score — YES
  • Odds: +100 (DraftKings)

Both of these sides prefer to play exciting, attacking football, almost to a fault. They both conceded goals in their semifinal matches to lower-ranked opponents, something which is a feature not a bug.

Even in recent clean sheets for Ukraine against Italy and North Macedonia, or for Iceland in a win over Liechtenstein, there were big opportunities for the opposition which went begging. Italy and North Macedonia combined to put up 2.84 xG on 31 shots against Ukraine, while Liechtenstein only failed to score because Sandro Wiesser missed a penalty in first-half stoppage time.

Common recent opponents for the two teams include Bosnia & Herzegovina, who Ukraine conceded an own-goal to in their playoff semifinal days ago, while Iceland kept a clean sheet in a 1-0 victory despite 16 shots from their opposition worth 1.75 xG (it was a very poor day for the aging Edin Dzeko).

These two nations will not sit back and hope the other side presents them with an opening — they will look to create their own chances, and leave spaces in behind in the process.

Ukraine vs Iceland prop bet

  • Pick: Mykhaylo Mudryk to score or assist a goal
  • Odds: +125 (FanDuel)

Against a defensively leaky Iceland, Ukraine winger Mykhaylo Mudryk will have a field day. He was excellent against Bosnia & Herzegovina, only failing to grab a goal on his five shots thanks to two big saves by Ibrahim Sehic, while he also picked up 0.46 xA but didn't register an assist.

It's taken quite some time for Mudryk to get going at Chelsea this season, but the 23-year-old has notched five goal contributions in Premier League play since the start of December, plus two more in Cup action since then as well.

Mudryk's high volume doesn't always pay off, but he should have a great chance to make good on his opportunities here, with a goal and four assists to his name across eight international caps since last July.
