Senegal revived their Group A campaign at the expense of Qatar, finally seeing off the hosts despite Mohammed Muntari scoring his country's first World Cup goal.

After another poor performance, the hosts' exit from their own World Cup was confirmed later on Friday by the Netherlands' draw with Ecuador, after Senegal claimed Africa's first win of this 2022 tournament.

Qatar made three changes, bringing in Meshaal Barsham — younger brother of reigning world and Olympic high jump champion Mutaz Essa Barshim — in goal, and he was fortunate to see Famara Diedhiou's early header drop wide after being beaten to a corner.

Idrissa Gueye fired just wide as Senegal looked the more likely to score first, although Qatar were denied a penalty at the other end after Akram Afif went down under a challenge.

Two goals either side of halftime put the African champions in control. A defensive mistake provided the first as Boualem Khoukhi took a huge swing at Krepin Diatta's cross, lost his footing and presented the ball to Boulaye Dia, who slotted past Barsham.

Three minutes into the second half, Diedhiou met Ismail Jakobs' right-wing corner with a clever header at the near post.

The hosts responded with purpose, Abdelkarim Hassan flashing a swerving shot wide before Almoez Ali was denied by Edouard Mendy's fingertips, with what was Qatar's first shot on target of the entire tournament.

A second effort followed shortly afterwards, Senegal goalkeeper Mendy producing an even better stop to claw away Ismaeel Mohammad's effort from close range.

Just as the hosts looked to have run out of steam, substitute Muntari provided a moment of history, meeting Mohammad's pinpoint cross from the right with a powerful header to revive home hopes.

Those were swiftly extinguished four minutes late through one of Senegal's substitutes, Iliman Ndiaye surging down the right and pulling the ball back for Bamba Dieng to sweep in and finally seal the win.

Qatar vs Senegal live updates, highlights from 2022 World Cup

FULLTIME All over and maybe it is for Qatar too, depending on the result of the Netherlands-Ecuador game in an hour's time; Qatar will be out if the Dutch avoid defeat. The hosts never gave up but a shortage of quality in the final third cost them dear, while Senegal are back in Group A contention.

90 mins: We're into six minutes of stoppage time, but surely the game is up for Qatar.

87 mins: Pathe Ciss goes into the book for a lunging challenge on Ismaeel Mohammad, and it's a free-kick to Qatar to the right of the goal. The ball is rolled for Abdelkarim Hassan, who gets hold of the strike but fires it just past the post.

GOAL! 84 mins: Surely Senegal have finished off Qatar this time. Bamba Dieng holds his run and gets on the end of Iliman Ndiaye's cross, turning it first time past the goalkeeper. Probably the best move of the match and it gets a finish to match.

(US only)

82 mins: Senegal have responded to conceding by going in search of a third goal, but it's Qatar who have the momentum as we head into the final 10 minutes. Can they find another moment of inspiration?

GOAL! 78 mins: Qatar HAVE got one back! It's the substitute Mohammed Muntari who's got it, getting in between the Senegal central defenders to power Ismaeel Mohammad's pinpoint cross from the right past Edouard Mendy. The hosts have their first ever World Cup goal, and they can dream again!

(US only)

77 mins: Another double substitution for Senegal. Pape Cisse replaces Ismail Jakobs and Pape Sarr is on for Nampalys Mendy.

76 mins: Qatar looking like they know their fate here. They're knocking the ball around at the back but to no great purpose.

72 mins: Both coaches beginning to make changes as we enter the final stages. Abdulaziz Hatem came on for Qatar a couple of minutes ago and now Bamba Dieng and Iliman Ndiaye are on for Senegal, while Mohammed Muntari replaces Qatar captain Hassan Al-Haydos.

69 mins: With the game becoming increasingly stretched, Nampalys Mendy sends a shot just over the bar as Senegal break. Expect to see more of that in the final 20 minutes.

67 mins: That's an even better stop from Edouard Mendy, who claws behind Ismaeel Mohammad's effort down low to his right. Superb save to preserve Senegal's two-goal cushion.

(US only)

64 mins: Here's Senegal's first change, Pathe Ciss coming on for Krepin Diatta.

63 mins: And now Edouard Mendy is called into action, producing a good save low down to his right to tip Almoez Ali's low effort behind. That's Qatar's first shot on target at this tournament.

61 mins: Qatar have had Senegal pressed back for the last few minutes and Abdelkarim Hassan opts to try his luck from 25m out, a swerving effort flashing past Edouard Mendy's left-hand post with the goalkeeper diving across.

58 mins: Qatar are striving manfully to find a way back into this one but Senegal, that recent goalmouth scramble aside, aren't looking remotely troubled.

55 mins: Chaos in the Senegal penalty area as a right-wing freekick comes into the box, the ball falling for Abdelkarim Hassan but Almoez Ali manages to inadvertently block the shot, which didn't look like it was going in in any case.

52 mins: Having delivered the corner for the goal moments ago, Ismail Jakobs goes into the book for a block on Ismaeel Mohammad as the Qatar man tries to get on to a return pass down the right.

GOAL! 48 mins: Senegal have struck again and it's a fantastic header from Famara Diedhiou that's done the trick! The forward creates some space at the near post to meet Ismail Jakobs' right-wing corner, and flicks an expert finish inside the far post. Qatar on the brink now, and just what Senegal wanted.

(UK only)

46 mins: Senegal get us going again. They're in front, but with goal difference a potential issue, they probably need to score more in this second half.

HALFTIME: Senegal have done enough at the break to lead, although it took a defensive mistake for Boulaye Dia to break the deadlock. Qatar have struggled to muster any sort of attacking threat, and are staring down the barrel of elimination after only two games.

45+4 mins: Akram Afif has looked the most likely to make something happen for Qatar, getting into the penalty area and firing the ball across. Kalidou Koulibaly turns it behind, but that wasn't great communication between the Senegal captain and his Chelsea teammate Edouard Mendy.

45+2 mins: Kalidou Koulibaly is brought down by a late Homam Ahmed challenge and that's a booking all day long.

45 mins: We're into seven minutes of stoppage time now, with the deflated hosts needing the whistle to regroup. At the moment a second Senegal goal looks more likely than a Qatar equaliser.

GOAL! 41 mins: That's poor defending from the hosts, and they've been punished. Boualem Khoukhi takes a huge swing at at attempted clearance, losing his footing and presenting the ball to Boulaye Dia, who duly slots in to give Senegal the lead.

(US only)

(UK only)

38 mins: Senegal have had several half-chances, but haven't really done enough to look like scoring. How long will that continue?

34 mins: That's Qatar's best moment of the match as Akram Afif bursts into the area after a good first-time passing move and goes down under Ismaila Sarr's challenge. The referee says no penalty, but that was a tight, tight call.

(US only)

32 mins: Boulaye Dia leaves a foot in on Homam Ahmed, who falls awkwardly on to his fingers. Treatment and strapping on his right hand for the Qatar man, and a yellow card for the Senegal forward.

30 mins: Meshaal Barsham is out sharply against as Edouard Mendy's long clearance looks for Ismaila Sarr, and the Qatar goalkeeper is fortunate there's a teammate there to tidy up after he fails to get there first, Boualem Khoukhi heading the ball back to his goalkeeper.

29 mins: Qatar's new goalkeeper Meshaal Barsham has shown plenty of willingness to come off his line to claim balls into his area, applying a good punch here. The ball falls to the edge of the area where Youssouf Sabaly volleys wide, although the flag is up in any case.

26 mins: Abdelkarim Hassan comes forward for Qatar and opts to try his luck from range, the ball flicking off Idrissa Gueye on its way over the bar – although no corner is awarded, much to Qatar's annoyance.

24 mins: A change of tempo for Senegal and that's the best moment of the match so far, Idrissa Gueye driving forward and firing just past the post from the edge of the penalty area.

(UK only)

22 mins: Still goalless but no shortage of noise and colour!

20 mins: Ismaeel Mohammad brings down Boulaye Dia as the Senegal forward goes down the left, and that's the first yellow card of the contest.

17 mins: Qatar had all sorts of problems at the back in their first game, but Meshaal Barsham does well to adjust here, the replacement keeper turning behind Krepin Diatta's deflected cross-shot from the left. He comes a long way for the resulting corner, though, and gets absolutely nowhere near it and is fortunate to see the ball flick wide off the head of Famara Diedhiou.

15 mins: The hosts have certainly started this one better than their opening fixture, and here's their first shot of the evening. Kalidou Koulibaly rises to head away as far as Akram Afif, but he's unable to get over the 20m volley and slices the ball high and wide.

12 mins: The Senegal game plan looks to be quite clear; get the ball out wide. The African side have managed to work a few promising crossing positions already, but without finding the quality on the final ball.

8 mins: More good work from Ismaila Sarr, who turns on the afterburners to keep the ball in down the right. His cross finds Famara Diedhiou, who takes a touch and opts to find Nampalys Mendy instead of having a go himself, and the shot is wide. Diedhiou would probably have been better trying a first-time effort.

5 mins: That's positive from Ismaila Sarr, the Senegal winger attacking at pace down the right and breaking into the penalty area. His cross-shot looks to have deflected behind off Assim Madibo, but a goal kick is awarded, much to Sarr's disbelief.

3 mins: Neither side able to get a sustained period of possession as yet, with both looking to get the ball forward quickly. Needs someone to put their foot on it.

KICKOFF! Qatar get us started, with neither side able to afford another defeat as they look to keep their Group A hopes alive.

5 mins to kickoff: Here come the teams; the anthems and kickoff are moments away.

7 mins to kickoff: There's a great atmosphere in store for this one!

10 mins to kickoff: Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly has backed under pressure goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, saying: "We speak a lot, we play at the same club and we are brothers in arms for Senegal. He is a very important player for us, it is normal to go through difficult phases.

"We are making a mountain out of a molehill here. He knows what he needs to do, the rest of the team do as well and we are going to try to put everything together to pull something out of the bag.

"When a team loses it's not down to one player, it's down to the whole team. We are going to do everything we can to change this but I don't think we should be making a big deal of this. I am not worried, I know Edouard will be on top of his game."

15 mins to kickoff: One of the best seats in the house...

20 mins to kickoff: Qatar had won five matches in a row before losing 2-0 to Ecuador on Sunday, only their second defeat in their last 14 official matches. However, the Maroons are without a win in three previous home meetings with African opponents, losing twice to Algeria and drawing with Egypt.

Midfielder Ismail Mohamad said: "We have to focus on ourselves, we want to give it our all. It is very important to be in good shape and make everyone proud. The first step we will do is to try and do that and deliver on the pitch. We will strive to make you proud, we will try our best to play at our best level to give you joy. This match will show what we are capable of."

30 mins from kickoff: Senegal looking on it; they can't afford to drop more points here.

45 mins from kickoff: No real surprise to see a change in goal for the hosts, Saad Al-Sheeb making way for Meshaal Barsham after an erratic display against Ecuador. For Senegal, meanwhile, Edouard Mendy keeps his place between the sticks despite plenty of criticism for his part in the two Netherlands' goals.

Also for Senegal Farmara Diedhiou replaces Cheikhou Kouyate  with Ismail Jakobs coming into defence. Iliman Ndiaye and Pape Matar Sarr are options from the bench if the game remains goalless.

55 mins from kickoff: Teams are IN! Here's how the two sides line up for this one:

1 hr 5 from kickoff: Not long to go until official team news drops. Will the hosts make big changes from their opening defeat? Will Edouard Mendy keep his place in goal for Senegal? All should be revealed shortly...

1 hr 20 from kickoff: Not many better views than this one today.

1 hr 40 from kickoff: Inside the Senegal dressing room at the Al Thumama Stadium. Looking good!

2 hrs from kickoff: With the game fast approaching, the Senegal players have been relaxing with a pre-match stroll. Hope they didn't walk too far!

2 hrs 30 mins from kickoff: The anticipation is building as we look ahead to the action at Al Thumama Stadium. There has been much said already about the support for the home side, after TV pictures showed empty seats towards the end of their opening loss to Ecuador, but these Qatar fans yesterday certainly seemed to be passionate enough!

3 hrs 30 mins from kickoff: There is so much on the line for the hosts in this one, as they seek to avoid becoming only the second team to hold the World Cup and exit at their own tournament in the first stage. South Africa in 2010 were the other one. Can they give the home fans something to cheer today?

4 hrs 45 mins from kickoff: There's some buzz around Senegal's Illiman Ndiaye and what he might be able to do if given the opportunity. We'll see if he gets his third cap in this critical World Cup match.

5 hrs from kickoff: The reigning African champions Senegal were expected to be one of the top two to advance from Group A, but there's another scenario that could see it miss out entirely, which would make for a fascinating trend.

Qatar vs Senegal lineups, team news

Qatar manager Felix Sanchez opts to change goalkeeper, where Meshaal Barsham filld in for Saad Al-Sheeb, who struggled mightily against Ecuador.

For all his experience, playmaker Hasan Al-Haydos was another player who struggled to match the physicality and speed of the Ecuador team but he keeps his place in the starting XI.

Qatar (5-3-2, right to left): 22-Barsham (GK) — 2-Pedro Miguel, 17-Mohamad, 16-Khoukhi, 3-Hassan, 14-Ahmed — 10-Al-Haydos 12-Boudiaf, 23-Al Haj Madibo — 19-Ali, 11-Afif

Senegal have decided to stick with Chelsea's Edouard Mendy in goal, although Cheikhou Kouyate is dealing with a muscle issue and starts on the bench, Farmara Diedhiou taking his place while Ismail Jakobs comes into defence.

Sheffield United's 22-year-old Illiman Ndiaye, who has nine goals in 21 matches in the English second tier this season and was seen as a potential replacement for Sadio Mane's do-it-all attacking influence behind the forward, is again among the substitutes.

Senegal (4-2-3-1, right to left): 16-E. Mendy (GK) — 21-Sabaly, 3-Koulibaly, 14-Jakobs, 22-Diallo — 5-I. Gueye, 6-N. Mendy — 15-Diatta, 19-Diedhiou, 18-I. Sarr — 9-Dia

Qatar vs Senegal live stream, TV channel

After both teams lost their opener, only a win will do here, especially for hosts Qatar, who have the prospect of facing the No. 8-ranked Netherlands in the final group matchday.

Senegal will start the match at Al Thumama Stadium as favorites, especially after putting forth a strong performance against the Netherlands despite failing to score in a 2-0 loss. Qatar lost by the same score, but looked overwhelmed by the moment and have something to prove.
