Brazil were strongly tipped to be the team to beat at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, as the Selecao went in search of a record-extending sixth world title.

Despite not having won the World Cup since Ronaldo inspired them to glory back in 2002, Brazil were ranked No.1 in the world by FIFA.

Veteran coach Tite had one of the most complete squads on the planet, with Alisson, Ederson, Marquinhos, Fabinho, Casemiro, Neymar and Vinicius Jr. among their list of global stars.

A two-decade wait for the game's biggest prize increased the pressure on Brazil to win the World Cup, and despite failing to win the Copa America in 2021, the feeling was that this was their best chance in a long time to end their drought.

Brazil 2022 World Cup schedule

Brazil's dream ended in the quarterfinals against Croatia after a heartbreaking penalty shootout defeat to the 2018 runners-up.

Tite's side opened their campaign in Qatar with a confident 2-0 win over Serbia before scraping past Switzerland 1-0.

With knockout round qualification already secured, Brazil rested players against Cameroon, who took full advantage to claim a late 1-0 win.

Despite that defeat, Brazil still finished top of their group on goal difference and as a result got to face South Korea rather than Portugal in the Round of 16. Tite's side scored four goals in the first-half against their Asian opponents as they eased into the quarterfinals.

Croatia were next up, after they beat Japan on penalties when their game ended 1-1 after 120 minutes.  And Dominik Livakovic was Croatia’s penalty shootout hero once again, as the 2018 finalists ended Brazil's World Cup dream.

Neymar thought he had booked a place in the semifinals for the five-time winners, with a stunning extra-time effort illuminating the contest after a goalless 90 minutes but Zlatko Dalic’s remarkable team produced a sting in the tail when substitute Bruno Petkovic beat Alisson with a deflected strike in the 117th minute.
