Man United hang on vs Newcastle: Score, result, Ten Hag's side still battling for European qualification

OLD TRAFFORD, MANCHESTER — Manchester United kept their chances of qualifying for Europe via the Premier League alive as they beat Newcastle United 3-2.

Goals from Kobbie Mainoo, Amad Diallo and Rasmus Hojlund helped Erik ten Hag's side to a much-needed three points. 

It's a victory that doesn't actually move them up the Premier League table, though, due to their embarrassing negative goal difference. It does, however, mean they could still qualify to play in Europe next season, even in the event of losing the FA Cup final to Manchester City later this month.

United took the lead through 19-year-old Mainoo who calmly finished after being picked out by Diallo. Mainoo initially appeared to be offside but Kieran Trippier, like Casemiro at the weekend, was caught slacking in the box and left the midfielder onside by some distance. It was a cool finish from the youngster.

Ten Hag's men took the one-goal lead into the break but they came out of the interval switched off and Eddie Howe's team made them pay. Sofyan Amrabat, who retained his starting place after returning for the defeat to Arsenal, made a woeful defensive error in his own half. Newcastle broke well down the right and Jacob Murphy played a perfect ball into the box for Anthony Gordon to knock past Andre Onana.

The game then opened itself up as both teams were desperate for three points given their jocking for UEFA competition places ahead of the final weekend.

Bruno Fernandes' corner was struck with such power it could only be cleared directly into the path of Amad Diallo who struck the ball first time and with some venom behind it. It was so well-timed that Martin Dubravka had only just begun to dive to make the save but the ball had already ripped into the back of the net.

It's astonishing that it's taken Amad this much time to seal his place in the starting XI but his performances vs Newcastle and against Arsenal illustrate why he should have been ahead of Antony in the right-wing pecking order months ago.

Hojlund, who started on the bench, came on with 10 minutes to play and his first involvement saw him seal the three points. He shifted the ball onto his sweaker right foot and impressively found the far corner.

Lewis Hall then gave United a late scare as he halved the deficit with a superb strike from outside the box. The young English left-back tucked his effort into the far right corner from the left and Onana watched it nestle into the goal.  

Ultimately, it turned out to be a consolation goal as the hosts held unfussily onto their lead.

90th minute: There are six minutes of added time to play.

89th minute: Joelinton tries his luck from distance but it's a miserable effort and it flies well over the bar.

84th minute: GOALLL! HOJLUND! With his very first involvement of the game, he takes the ball onto his 'weaker' right foot and smashes home to seal the three points.

80th minute: A triple change for United. Lisandro Martinez, Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund are coming on for United in the hope of seeing this game out.

73rd minute: Gordon leaves Casemiro for dead after a beautiful piece of skill before firing a tantalising ball into the box but Almiron can't reach it at the far post. A let-off for the home side.

70th minute: This game has really opened up now and is providing some cracking entertainment. It's going to be a huge 20 minutes for both teams' season.

64th minute: Fernandes is hobbling for a third time this evening but he's yet again shown his leaders' mentality and soldiers on. 

57th minute: GOALLL! Amad with a sensational strike. United are back in the lead and Old Trafford is rocking.

53rd minute: Newcastle counter immediately from the Dubravka save and Gordon picks out Isak but the Swedish striker takes too much time and Amrabat makes a cracking last-ditch challenge. 

52nd minute: Fernandes plays a superb one-two with Garnacho from the corner and hammers an effort at goal but Dubravka makes a cracking save. 

48th minute: GOAL! Gordon pulls Newcastle level with an easy finish from the six-yard box.

46th minute: We're back underway at Old Trafford.

HT: So far so good for United as they lead at the break. In the other game, Chelsea have a 1-0 advantage over Brighton which means Ten Hag's side still sit eighth in the table and outside of the European places.

43rd minute: Trippier's cross is a good one and Guimaraes gets his head on it well but it's narrowly wide.

40th minute: The Brazilian defender is then down on the ground injured and needs treatment but will be coming back on.

37th minute: The Newcastle fans believe Burn's header has gone over the line for a goal but Casemiro clears in the nick of time! Terrific defending from the Brazilian.

35th minute: Amrabat almost made a right mess defensively there as he was dispossessed by Gordon but he recovers just in time. 

32nd minute: GOAL! MAINOO! The 19-year-old gives United the lead with a composed finish in the box. He looked miles offside but Trippier is caught slacking and is playing him well onside.

28th minute: Diallo's effort is well wide of the goal.  

22nd minute: Fernandes has been United's best player so far in the first half, unsurprisingly. 

13th minute: McTominay finds himself in the box and outjumps Krafth to get a head on Wan-Bissaka's cross but it's a weak effort and Dubravka collects. 

9th minute: Ten Hag's side appear to have woken up slightly and their first real chance comes in an acrobatic fashion as Casemiro attempts a wild overhead kick in the box.

5th minute: The visitors have had a bright start and have had the ball in United's box on a couple of occasions so far.

1st minute: Newcastle have decided to swap ends so United will attack the Stretford End in the first half.

15 mins before kickoff: Some Newcastle fans already have their shirts off inside the away end. It's been raining on and off all evening but their spirits haven't been dampened and are making themselves heard. 

30 mins before kickoff: No Premier League player has started more games in all competitions this season than Andre Onana (49). Perhaps he could dedicate a clean sheet to that stat tonight!
