The United States and Canada both came into the 2022 Beijing Olympics with hopes for a curling gold medal.

The men's curling teams from the two North American nations were the most recent gold-medal winners, with the U.S. having won in 2018 and Canada having won each Olympics from 2006 to 2014. But the two teams lost in the semifinals Thursday, and now will face off against one another in the bronze-medal match with each hoping to leave with some hardware.

The two teams largely struggled in the round-robin stage. Though both qualified for the semifinals, the two squads finished 5-4. Canada had impressive wins against the United States (10-5), China (10-8) and Norway (6-5), but lost to the top two teams in the round robin, Sweden (7-4) and Great Britain (5-2).

The United States handed Great Britain its only loss of the stage in a 9-7 win and beat China (8-6) and Switzerland (7-4), but took a bad 10-4 loss to Italy late.

In the semifinal round, Great Britain avenged its loss to the United States by winning 8-4, while Sweden picked up its second win against Canada in a 5-3 victory to set the top two teams up in the gold-medal match. Sweden has never won a men's curling gold medal, while Great Britain has only won the first curling Olympics event in 1924.
