NHL offseason movement 2022: Full list of every team's additions and departures from Matthew Tkachuk to Johnny Gaudreau

The NHL offseason has died down, as teams are preparing to gear up for the 2022-23 season. Players have started to come back to their respective cities, getting set to partake in preseason training camp.

As is every summer, there are new faces in new places. Some of the most notable moves included Johnny Gaudreau shocking the hockey world by signing with the Blue Jackets, the monster blockbuster trade that sent Matthew Tkachuk to the Panthers for Jonathan Huberdeau and MacKenzie Weegar and the Senators move to acquire Alex DeBrincat from the Blackhawks on draft day.

There are certain teams that definitely got better. The Senators and Red Wings stand out the most, as they both have been two teams sitting at the bottom of the Atlantic Division, but now seem to have a real shot at making the playoffs. On the hand, there are clubs that did not improve and might have gotten worse, like the Blackhawks and Coyotes who have their eyes instead on Connor Bedard and the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NHL draft.

With the start of the season, just a few weeks away, here is a look at all of the offseason moves by the 32 teams.

NHL offseason moves by team

Anaheim Ducks

Notable additions: D John Klingberg, F Ryan Strome, F Frank Vatrano, D Dmitry Kulikov

Notable losses: F Ryan Getzlaf, F Sam Steel, F Sonny Milano, F Zach Aston-Reese, D Andrej Sustr

First-round draft picks: D Pavel Mintyukov, F Nathan Gaucher

The Ducks lost long-time captain Ryan Getzlaf to retirement, but brought in former Rangers Ryan Strome and Frank Vatrano. The team's biggest get was John Klingberg, who gives them a great puck-moving defenseman for the time being. He signed a one-year deal and can be flipped at the deadline for assets. However, the Ducks still look to be at least one, maybe two years away form coming out of the rebuild.

Arizona Coyotes

Notable additions: F Zack Kassian, F Nick Bjugstad, D, Troy Stetcher, D Josh Brown, D Patrik Nemeth, G Jon Gillies

Notable losses: F Phil Kessel, F Jay Beagle, F Loui Eriksson, F Antoine Roussel, D Anton Stralman, D Kyle Capobianco

First-round draft picks: F Logan Cooley, F Conor Geekie, D Maveric Lamoureaux

The Coyotes continued its trend of taking on bad contracts (Zack Kassian, Patrik Nemeth) in order to gain draft capital. The team lets a number of older veterans walk in free agency, as another season at the bottom of the league is expected out in the desert.

Boston Bruins

Notable additions: F David Krejci, F Pavel Zacha

Notable losses: F Erik Haula, F Curtis Lazar, F Anton Blidh, D Josh Brown

First-round draft picks: N/A

It was a quiet offseason for the Bruins, whose biggest move of the summer was to re-sign Patrice Bergeron and bring back David Krejci. The team did swap Erik Haula for Pavel Zacha, but cap constraints made it tough for Boston to move the needle. With a lot of Atlantic teams getting better, it feels like the Bruins may be on the outside looking in by the spring.

Buffalo Sabres

Notable additions: D Ilya Lyubushkin, F Riley Sheahan, G Eric Comrie

Notable losses: F Drake Caggiula, D Colin Miller, D Mark Pysyk, F John Hayden, F Cody Eakin, D Will Butcher, G Dustin Tokarski, G Aaron Dell

First-round draft picks: F Matthew Savoie, F Noah Ostlund, F Jiri Kulich

After a barrage of one-year deals handed out in the summer of 2021, the Sabres let a number of older players walk this year and didn't make any significant splashes. With a ton of prospects on the verge of cracking the NHL roster, Buffalo is relying on its young players to progress and fill out the lineup.

Calgary Flames

Notable additions: F Jonathan Huberdeau, F Nazem Kadri, D MacKenzie Weegar, F Kevin Rooney, F Sonny Milano

Notable losses: F Johnny Gaudreau, F Matthew Tkachuk, F Calle Jarnkrok, F Sean Monahan, D Erik Gudbrandson

First-round draft picks: N/A

No team changed the stars in the lineup more this summer than the Flames. While the team lost Johnny Gaudreau in free agency and traded away Matthew Tkachuk, Calgary got Jonathan Huberdeau and MacKenzie Weegar in return and signed Nazem Kadri. Even with all of the roster turnover at the top of the lineup, the Flames are in a position to be just as good, if not better, this season.

Carolina Hurricanes

Notable additions: F Max Pacioretty, D Brent Burns, F Paul Stastny, F Ondrej Kase

Notable losses: F Vincent Trochek, F Nino Neiderreiter, D Ian Cole, F Max Domi, D Brendan Smith, F Steven Lorentz

First-round draft picks: N/A

The Hurricanes were one of the top winners in free agency without actually landing a big free agent signing. The two significant moves for Carolina were acquiring Brent Burns and Max Pacioretty, giving the team a replacement for Tony DeAngelo on the blue line and a scoring winger for the top-six. The Hurricanes got a lot better this offseason.

Chicago Blackhawks

Notable additions: F Max Domi, F Andreas Athanasiou, F Colin Blackwell, D Jack Johnson, G Petr Mrazek

Notable losses: F Alex DeBrincat, F Kirby Dach, F Dominik Kubalik, F Dylan Strome, G Kevin Lankinen, D Calvin de Haan, D Erik Gustafsson, F Henrik Borgstrom

First-round draft picks: D Kevin Korchinski, F Frank Nazar, D Sam Rinzel

A lot of selling this offseason by the Blackhawks, as the team traded away Alex DeBrincat and Kirby Dach, signaling the beginning of the rebuild. With a handful of players signing one-year deals, it's a chance for Chicago to flip them at the trade deadline for more draft picks. It's going to be a long season in Chicago.

MORE: Who are the NHL's highest-paid players in 2022-23?

Colorado Avalanche

Notable additions: F Evan Rodrigues, G Alexandar Georgiev, F Anton Blidh, D Brad Hunt

Notable losses: F Nazem Kadri, F Andre Burakovsky, G Darcy Kuemper, D Jack Johnson, F Nico Sturm, F Nicolas Aube-Kubel

First-round draft picks: N/A

The reigning Stanley Cup champions lost a number of key players to free agency like Nazem Kadri, Andre Burakovsky and Darcy Kuemper, but the team brought back Valeri Nichushkin and Josh Manson on new deals. Colorado also shored up its goaltending by acquiring Alexandar Georgiev from the Rangers. However, there's enough talent still on the roster for the team to make a run at back-to-back Cups.

Columbus Blue Jackets

Notable additions: F Johnny Gaudreau, D Erik Gudbrandson

Notable losses: F Oliver Bjorkstrand, F Alex Texier, F Kevin Stenlund, D Dean Kukan, F Gabriel Carlsson

First-round draft picks: D David Jiricek, D Denton Mateychuk

No team landed as big of a free agent splash as the Blue Jackets, who shocked the hockey world by winning the Johnny Gaudreau sweepstakes. While it's a huge get for the team, it came at the cost of sending Oliver Bjorkstrand out to the Kraken to clear space. The team also re-signed star winger Patrik Laine. While it was a successful offseason in Columbus, it is likely that the team will remain outside the playoff picture again.

Dallas Stars

Notable additions: F Mason Marchment, D Colin Miller, D Will Butcher, F Riley Barber

Notable losses: D John Klingberg, F Alex Radulov, F Vladislav Namestnikov, G Braden Holtby

First-round draft picks: D Lian Bichsel

There was certainly not much "big" going down in Texas. The Stars landed a solid winger in Mason Marchment and brought in Colin Miller to help the blue line after letting John Klingberg walk. The main focus for the Stars was on their RFAs Jason Robertson and Jake Oettinger, however as of publication, Robertson remains without a deal.

Detroit Red Wings

Notable additions: F Andrew Copp, D Ben Chiarot, G Ville Husso, F David Perron, F Dominik Kubalik, D Olli Maatta, D Robert Hagg, D Mark Pysyk

Notable losses: F Sam Gagner, D Marc Staal, D Danny DeKeyser, G Thomas Greiss, G Calvin Pickard, D Riley Barber, F Mitchell Stephens

First-round draft picks: F Marco Kasper

Busy, busy, BUSY offseason for Steve Yzerman and the Red Wings. A ton of guys out the door with plenty of new faces coming in. Most notably are the addition of Andrew Copp, Ben Chiarot and Ville Husso, as the Red Wings look to complete the rebuild. While Detroit will be much more competitive than recent years, I still think they are a step away from making the playoffs.

Edmonton Oilers

Notable additions: G Jack Campbell, F Mattias Janmark, D Ryan Murray, G Calvin Pickard

Notable losses: D Duncan Keith, F Zack Kassian, G Mikko Koskinen, F Josh Archibald, F Derick Brassard, F Colton Sceviour, F Brendan Perlini

First-round draft picks: F Reid Schaefer

There's a lot to like about the Oilers' offseason. Ken Holland addressed the team's biggest need by getting Jack Campbell to solidify the goaltending. He also re-signed Evander Kane and Brett Kulak, who both were brought in mid-season last year and helped significantly on the team's run to the conference finals. The Oilers are expected to compete for a Cup again, and Campbell figures to play a big role in that.

Florida Panthers

Notable additions: F Matthew Tkachuk, F Nick Cousins, D Michael Del Zotto, F Colin White, F Rudolfs Balcers, F Chris Tierney, D Marc Staal

Notable losses: F Claude Giroux, F Jonathan Huberdeau, D MacKenzie Weegar, D Ben Chiarot, F Mason Marchment, F Noel Acciari, D Markus Nutivaara, F Joe Thornton

First-round draft picks: N/A

Did the Panthers get better this offseason? It's hard to say. Adding Matthew Tkachuk was a huge get for the team, but it cost both Jonathan Huberdeau and MacKenzie Weegar. Deadline acquisitions Claude Giroux and Ben Chiarot are gone, as well as Mason Marchment. It's tough to think that the team that landed Tkachuk actually got worse, but there's an argument to be made here. Nonetheless, the Panthers will still be one of the top teams in the league after winning the Presidents' Trophy last year.

Los Angeles Kings

Notable additions: F Kevin Fiala

Notable losses: F Dustin Brown, F Andreas Athanasiou, D Olli Maata, D Troy Stetcher

First-round draft picks: N/A

The Kings did not make a ton of noise this summer, with the long addition being the trade for Kevin Fiala. It's a great get for Los Angeles, who add a scoring threat to the top-six. After surprising some with a playoff appearance last year, the Kings are officially out of the rebuild and looking to becoming a legit contender.

Minnesota Wild

Notable additions: F Sam Steel, F Nicolas Petan, D Andrej Sustr, G Filip Gustavsson

Notable losses: F Kevin Fiala, G Cam Talbot, D Dmitry Kulikov, F Nicolas Deslauriers, F Nick Bjugstad, D Jordie Benn

First-round draft picks: F Liam Ohgren, F Danila Yurov

Another team with not a ton of movement this offseason. The Wild were handicapped with the buyouts of Zach Parise and Ryan Suter, resulting in the team trading away Kevin Fiala, as they could not afford to re-sign him. Minnesota elected to re-sign Marc-Andre Fleury in net and send Cam Talbot out to Ottawa. The Wild will still be good, but they did not get better.

Montreal Canadiens

Notable additions: F Kirby Dach, F Evgenii Dadonov, D Mike Matheson, F Sean Monahan, F Mitchell Stephens

Notable losses: D Jeff Petry, D Alexander Romanov, F Tyler Pitlick, F Cedric Paquette, F Mathieu Perreault

First-round draft picks: F Juraj Slafkovsky, F Filip Mesar

Kent Hughes was wheeling and dealing this summer, trading away Jeff Petry and Alexander Romanov while bringing in Kirby Dach, Evgenii Dadonov, Mike Matheson and Sean Monahan. The team is still in cap hell and likely needs to move another contract before the start of the season. Despite all of the personnel turnover, the Habs aren't going to be competing for another other than last place in the Atlantic.

Nashville Predators

Notable additions: D Ryan McDonagh, F Nino Neiderreiter, G Kevin Lankinen, F John Leonard, F Zach Sanford

Notable losses: D Philippe Myers, F Nick Cousins, F Luke Kunin, D Matt Benning, G David Rittich

First-round draft picks: F Joakim Kemell

The Predators had a sneaky good offseason, re-signing Filip Forsberg, trading for Ryan McDonagh and signing Nino Neiderreiter. The team didn't lose any significant pieces and brought in a couple that should help the team out. Nashville has made the playoffs the last eight seasons, but have not been past the first round since 2018. The club has hopes to make a deeper run this season.

New Jersey Devils

Notable additions: F Ondrej Palat, F Erik Haula, G Vitek Vanecek, D John Marino, D Brendan Smith

Notable losses: D Ty Smith, D P.K. Subban, F Pavel Zacha, F Jimmy Vesey, F Juane Kuokkanen, G Andrew Hammond, G Jon Gillies

First-round draft picks: D Simon Nemec

The Devils missed out on Johnny Gaudreau and had to settle for Ondrej Palat instead, who does bring two Cup wins to Newark. New Jersey also made some trades to get goaltender Vitek Vanecek, defensemen John Marino and forward Erik Haula. Despite some shifting around on the roster, the Devils are still going to be a bottom-tier team.

New York Islanders

Notable additions: D Alexander Romanov

Notable losses: D Zdeno Chara, D Andy Greene

First-round draft picks: N/A

The Islanders had, by far, the quietest offseason out of any team. They brought in Alexander Romanov and re-signed Noah Dobson and Kiefer Bellows, but that's about it. Nazem Kadri did not end up signing with the Isles as expected and New York heads into this summer with a roster that is going to be almost entirely the same. Can the team prove that last season's underwhelming performance was only due to a series of unfortunate events?

New York Rangers

Notable additions: F Vincent Trocheck, G Jaroslav Halak

Notable losses: F Andrew Copp, F Ryan Strome, F Frank Vatrano, G Alexandar Georgiev, F Kevin Rooney, F Tyler Motte, D Justin Braun, D Patrik Nemeth

First-round draft picks: N/A

The Rangers let a number of players walk in free agency, including Andrew Copp, Ryan Strome and Frank Vatrano, while bringing in Vincent Trocheck to replace Copp/Strome as the second-line center. After an extremely successful season last year, the Rangers are relying on their young players to progress another year and help the team back to the conference finals.

Ottawa Senators

Notable additions: F Alex DeBrincat, F Claude Giroux, G Cam Talbot

Notable losses: G Matt Murray, G Filip Gustavsson, F Colin White, F Connor Brown, D Victor Mete, F Chris Tierney, D Michael Del Zotto, F Tyler Ennis, F Adam Gaudette

First-round draft picks: N/A

Outside of the Red Wings, no other team made as much noise this offseason as the Senators. Ottawa acquired star winger Alex DeBrincat from the Blackhawks and signed Claude Giroux to a three-year deal. It gives the Senators one of the best top-six forward groups in the league. They also went and traded for Cam Talbot after shipping Matt Murray to the Maple Leafs. The blue line is still a concern and could be what holds this group back from being a playoff contender.

Philadelphia Flyers

Notable additions: D Tony DeAngelo, F Nicolas Deslauriers, D Justin Braun

Notable losses: D Keith Yandle, F Oskar Lindblom, G Martin Jones, F Nate Thompson

First-round draft picks: F Cutter Gauthier

It was a tough summer for Flyers fans. Johnny Gaudreau practically begged Chuck Fletcher to sign him, but the Flyers could not due to financial restraints, leaving Gaudreau to sign elsewhere. Philadelphia brought in Tony DeAngelo to shore up the blue line, but all in all, there's not a ton to be positive about heading into the season. The team is in cap hell and yet, the group they have in Philly isn't good enough to contend. There's just no clear direction as to where this club is going.

Pittsburgh Penguins

Notable additions: D Jeff Petry, D Jan Rutta, D Ty Smith, F Drake Caggiula, F Josh Archibald, G Dustin Tokarski, F Ryan Poehling

Notable losses: F Evan Rodrigues, D John Marino, D Mike Matheson, F Brian Boyle, D Nathan Beaulieu

First-round draft picks: D Owen Pickering

While the Penguins did sign a ton of new names, it is the familiar ones that were the biggest headlines. Pittsburgh got the band back together before it could even leave, as the team re-signed Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang, Bryan Rust and Rickard Rakell, in addition to Casey DeSmith. The team also re-shaped the blue line by acquiring Jeff Petry and Ty Smith while sending out John Marino and Mike Matheson. Ron Hextall and the club want to make another run with the core group that has been in Pittsburgh for years.

San Jose Sharks

Notable additions: F Nico Sturm, F Luke Kunin, F Steven Lorentz, D Matt Benning, F Oskar Lindblom, D Markus Nutivaara, G Aaron Dell, F Evgeny Svechnikov

Notable losses: D Brent Burns, G Adin Hill, F Rudolfs Balcers, F Jonathan Dahlen

First-round draft picks: F Filip Bystedt

New GM Mike Grier took the first step in righting the ship in San Jose by trading Brent Burns and his $8 million cap hit to the Hurricanes. The Sharks signed a number of players to short-term deals this offseason, as Grier and new coach David Quinn aim to restore the team's identity. However, the Sharks still look like a team that is going to struggle in the Western Conference.

Seattle Kraken

Notable additions: F Oliver Bjorkstrand, F Andre Burakovsky, D Justin Schultz, G Martin Jones, D Michal Kempny, F John Jayden,

Notable losses: F Riley Sheahan, F Victor Rask, D Haydn Fleury,

First-round draft picks: F Shane Wright

Seattle didn't lose a ton of free agents because, well, they shipped off nearly all of them at the deadline. The Kraken made some solid acquisitions, signing Andre Burakovsky and Justin Schultz in free agency and taking advantage of the Blue Jacket's cap crunch and trading for Oliver Bjorkstrand for two mid-round picks. While the Kraken will be better this season, the star power and depth are lacking on the team and it's going to be another season ending with lottery aspirations.

St. Louis Blues

Notable additions: F Noel Acciari, G Thomas Greiss

Notable losses: F David Perron, G Ville Husso, F Tyler Bozak, G Charlie Lindgren, F Dakota Joshua

First-round draft picks: F Jimmy Snuggerud

St. Louis didn't make many moves this offseason, as the only notable additions were a fourth-liner in Noel Acciari and backup goalie in Thomas Greiss. The Blues made their goaltending decision, electing to ride with Jordan Binnington and as a result, sending Ville Husso to the Red Wings. I think the David Perron loss will actually hurt the Blues more than they realize, and I still don't love what they've done with their defense. Nonetheless, this team is still good enough to compete with anyone and should be towards the top of the Central Division.

Tampa Bay Lightning

Notable additions: F Vladislav Namestnikov, D Ian Cole, D Haydn Fleury, D Philippe Myers

Notable losses: F Ondrej Palat, D Ryan McDonagh, D Jan Rutta, F Riley Nash

First-round draft picks: F Isaac Howard

The salary cap finally came back to bite the Lightning, as the team was forced to trade away Ryan McDonagh and could not re-sign Ondrej Palat. While the two weren't the stars of the team, they were excellent depth/secondary options that had a huge impact on the Lightning making it to three Stanley Cup Finals. Tampa Bay re-signed Nick Paul and gave out long-term extensions to Anthony Cirelli, Mikhail Sergachev and Erik Cernak. Despite the losses of Palat and McDonagh with the typical core group intact, the Lightning should once again be one of the final teams left standing by spring.

Toronto Maple Leafs

Notable additions: G Matt Murray, G Ilya Samsonov, F Nicolas Aube-Kubel, F Calle Jarnkrok, D Victor Mete, D Jordie Benn, F Adam Gaudette, F Zach Aston-Reese

Notable losses: G Jack Campbell, F Ilya Mikheyev, F Ondrej Kase, F Colin Blackwell, D Ilya Lyubushkin

First-round draft picks: N/A

The Maple Leafs addressed their goaltending vacancy by trading for Matt Murray and signing Ilya Samsonov in free agency, giving them two fringe starter options in net. The team also signed a handful of players that will be competing for bottom-six forward roles. The team in place certainly feels like they should be good enough to be a serious contender again, but goaltending will be the biggest factor for Toronto to finally get the first-round monkey off its back.

Vancouver Canucks

Notable additions: F Ilya Mikheyev, F Andrei Kuzmenko, F Curtis Lazar, F Dakota Joshua

Notable losses: G Jaroslav Halak, F Brandon Sutter, F Brad Richardson, F Alex Chiasson, F Nicolas Petan, D Brad Hunt

First-round draft picks: F Jonathan Lekkerimaki

Vancouver let a number of older players walk in free agency and got younger with the additions of Ilya Mikheyev and Andrei Kuzmenko. The biggest news out of Vancouver was the extension for J.T. Miller, who has been in trade rumors for over a year now, but now his future is in Vancouver. There's a lot of good pieces for the Canucks, but the blue line is still a worry heading into the season.

Vegas Golden Knights

Notable additions: F Phil Kessel, G Adin Hill

Notable losses: F Max Pacioretty, F Evgenii Dadonov, D Dylan Coghlan, F Mattias Janmark

First-round draft picks: N/A

Karma is something isn't it. There's cap hell and then there's whatever the Golden Knights have been operating in. Due to cap constraints, the team had to ship out Evgenii Dadonov and Max Pacioretty, the latter of which was traded for literally nothing — future considerations. Robin Lehner is out for the year, so the team traded for Adin Hill to be an option in net. Vegas has the talent to compete, but the health of the team will decide its fate.

Washington Capitals

Notable additions: G Darcy Kuemper, F Dylan Strome, F Connor Brown, D Erik Gustafsson, G Charlie Lindgren, F Gabriel Carlsson, F Henrik Borgstrom

Notable losses: G Ilya Samsonov, G Vitek Vanecek, D Justin Schultz, D Michal Kempny, F Johan Larsson

First-round draft picks: F Ivan Miroshnichenko

The Capitals sneakily had one of the better offseasons. They completely overhauled the goalie position, letting go of both young goalies in Ilya Samsonov and Vitek Vanecek and signing Darcy Kuemper. They also signed Dylan Strome and traded for Connor Brown, two forwards who can be used up and down the lineup. The Metro is going to be a difficult division to contend in, but Washington hit a lot of the right buttons this past summer to compete again.

Winnipeg Jets

Notable additions: F Sam Gagner, G David Rittich, F Kevin Stenlund, D Kyle Capobianco

Notable losses: F Paul Stastny, G Eric Comrie, F Evgeny Svechnikov, F Zach Sanford

First-round draft picks: F Rutger McGroarty, F Brad Lambert

The Jets didn't make any significant moves this offseason aside from re-signing Pierre-Luc Dubois on a short-term deal. It feels like this team is sort of in limbo, where they have one of the better top-six forward groups and one of the best goaltenders in the league, yet, it doesn't feel like the Jets are playoff contenders. Winnipeg certainly did not get better this offseason, so we'll see if a new coach is enough to get the Jets back to the postseason.
