49ers second-year quarterback Trey Lance exited San Francisco's game vs. the Seahawks with a broken right ankle.

The injury occurred toward the end of the first quarter with the 49ers driving inside Seattle's red zone. Lance kept the ball and appeared to break his ankle on an awkward tackle by Bryan Mone and Cody Barton.

Lance briefly got up before limping and immediately returning to the turf at Levi's Stadium. He was carted off the field shortly after the play.

After the game, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Lance will likely require surgery, ending his 2022 season.

Lance was clearly emotional as trainers situated his left ankle in an air cast. Both 49ers and Seahawks players came up to comfort him.

Lance finished the game completing 2 of 3 passes for 30 yards, adding 13 yards on three rushes. His backup Jimmy Garoppolo — who led the team to a 27-7 win over Seattle — will take over for the 49ers for the remainder of the season. San Francisco flirted with trading or cutting him in the offseason but opted instead to make him the league's highest-paid backup.

The 49ers on Monday released a statement confirming Lance underwent surgery on his ankle and will miss the remainder of the 2022 season. The surgery repaired a fibula fracture and ligament disruption.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance underwent successful surgery on his injured right ankle this morning, an injury that occurred in yesterday's game versus the Seattle Seahawks.

Surgery was performed at Stanford Hospital and repaired two injuries to Lance's ankle, a fibula fracture and ligament disruption. Lance will start the rehab process, and head team physician Dr. Tim McAdams is confident that he will recover completely in time for a full return in the 2023 season.

Lance also released a statement of appreciation to those who expressed concern for him:
