Senior Bowl final score, results: Fresno State QB Jake Haener named MVP as National team dominates

The National team defeated the American team 27-10 in the 2023 Senior Bowl on Saturday in Mobile, Ala.

More than 120 NFL Draft prospects showcased their skills in front of scouts from all 32 NFL teams. The Senior Bowl is regarded as the unofficial start to the NFL Draft process for many college stars with dreams of making it to the league. 

The biggest winner of the day was Fresno State quarterback Jake Haener, who was named MVP of the game after throwing for 139 yards and a touchdown on 12-of-19 passing.

Multiple quarterbacks took the field for both teams. TCU's Max Duggan, Louisville's Malik Cunningham, Houston's Clayton Tune and Tyson Bagent from Division II program Shepherd University also got snaps. Duggan, who led his Horned Frogs to the national championship game in the 2022 season, went just 4 of 9 for 26 yards.

Other standouts from the game included Stanford wide receiver Michael Wilson (four receptions, 76 yards, one TD); South Alabama wide receiver Jalen Wayne, son of former NFL star Reggie Wayne (eight receptions, 59 yards), and Northwestern running back Evan Hull (10 carries, 74 yards).

The next step in the draft process for these and other prospects is the NFL Combine, which will begin March 3 from Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

5:35 p.m. — Jake Haener has been named the 2023 Senior Bowl MVP. He finishes 12 of 19 with 139 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions. 

5:31 p.m. FINAL — The National team wins, 27-10, in the 2023 Senior Bowl.

5:29 p.m. INTERCEPTION — Bagent gets a little too ambitious, scrambling around and then throwing to his right, but the route is jumped and his pass is picked off by Maryland's Jakorian Bennett! That will do it for this game. The National team will get a commanding win over the American side. 

5:25 p.m. TWO-MINUTE WARNING — We've reached the final two-minute warning of the game with Bagent and his American teammates driving to try and close the gap. However, they'll need a miracle at this point, as they still trail by 10 points. 

National 27, American 10

5:17 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — Wow! From out of nowhere, Haener launches a deep ball to Wilson, who makes the catch and leaps into the end zone for a 44-yard touchdown! Not the best defense there, but Wilson won't care. He's had a really good day out there. 

5:15 p.m. TURNOVER ON DOWNS — A catch by Gray makes it 4th and 15, and with nothing to lose, the American team will go for it. But Bagent's throw is low and falls incomplete, turning the ball back over on downs. This game is winding down to what looks like a comfortable victory for the National team.

5:12 p.m. — But they're moving the wrong direction. A negative play, a sack on Bagent and then a false start makes it 3rd and a country mile. 

5:08 p.m. TURNOVER ON DOWNS — On 3rd and 22, Peoples bulldozes through a couple defenders but still comes up well short of the line to gain. They'll keep the offense on the field and go for it on 4th and 8, but Haener is wrapped up and sacked by Florida A&M's Isaiah Land. The American team could make things a little interesting in the final minutes if they can get points here. 

5:06 p.m. — The National team is moving methodically down the field here, burning clock as they go. However, a holding penalty will back them up and slow things down a bit. 

5:01 p.m. — Cunningham has been ruled out for the game with what trainers are calling a strained shoulder. Haener will take over under center for the rest of the game.

National 20, American 10

4:56 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — That'll help turn things around! Cunningham is back in at QB for the National team, but he's pressured and throws a weak, looping pass that is intercepted and run back 37 yards to the house by Virginia corner Anthony Johnson! Cunningham was shaken up trying to make a tackle at the end of that play, and unfortunately he'll have to head to the locker room.

End of third quarter: National 20, American 3

4:52 p.m. — Ouch, Podlesny's kick is no good from only about 30 yards. He'll be very disappointed with that miss. The American team wastes another opportunity to close the gap.

4:51 p.m. — Bagent nearly gets picked off as the third quarter winds down, but his blushes are spared after the defender couldn't get his foot down in bounds. With just a few seconds left on the clock, Podlesny trots on to attempt a field goal.

4:48 p.m. — Bagent has found some early chemistry with Miami tight end Will Mallory. The pair has connected three times on this drive, with the latest moving the American team inside the red zone. 

4:44 p.m. — Good start for Bagent, who completes his first three passes to pick up a pair of first downs. 

4:41 p.m. TWO-MINUTE WARNING — We're going to get our first look at Shepherd QB Tyson Bagent on this next drive. For those that aren't familiar, Shepherd is a small DII school of about 3,200 students in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. But first, the two-minute warning.

National 20, American 3

4:40 p.m. FIELD GOAL — Ryland gets back on track, knocking it through from 42 yards. He's had a busy day, that's for sure. 

4:39 p.m. — On 3rd down, Haener goes deep to the end zone for Tucker, but the coverage was good and he can't come down with it. This will be yet another field goal attempt for Ryland.

4:37 p.m. — Haener throws to Cincinnati WR Tre Tucker, who is wide open over the middle and makes the grab for a big gain of about 20 yards. 

4:27 p.m. TURNOVER ON DOWNS — Duggan goes deep to the end zone on a 2nd down play from inside National team territory, but it bounces out of the hands of Mingo. Two plays later, he takes another deep shot on 4th and 10 and has Princeton WR Andrei Iosivas open, but he just barely overthrows him. That's a turnover on downs, and the National side's dominance continues.

4:26 p.m. — Ryland's perfect afternoon comes to an end as his kick from 52 yards drifts wide left. The lead stays at 14 points for now. 

4:24 p.m. — Haener is back in the game for the National team, but after a short pass and an incompletion he faces a quick 3rd and 9. He drops back, but is sacked by LSU's Ali Gaye for a big loss. Ryland will come on for his fourth field goal try of the game, this one from more than 50 yards.

4:18 p.m. FUMBLE — Uh oh, rough start to the half for Duggan and the American squad. Duggan tripped on an attempted handoff to Rodriuguez and it threw the play off completely. Kansas DL Lonnie Phelps managed to rip the ball out, and his teammate pounced on it to force the first turnover of the afternoon!

4:17 p.m. START OF SECOND HALF — Ryland boots it away and the American team will get the ball first on offense to start the third quarter. 

4:15 p.m. — After a halftime performance by Southern University's "human jukebox" marching band, we're ready to get this second half underway.

3:57 p.m. — That was a really dominant performance by the National squad in the first half. They were able to move the ball at will throughout the second quarter, especially with Cunningham under center. We'll have to see if Duggan gets more of a chance to shine in the second half. 

End of first half: National 17, American 3

3:56 p.m. FIELD GOAL — Ryland caps off an excellent first half with another field goal, connecting from 41 yards to extend the National squad's lead. 

3:55 p.m. — Cunningham completes another pass to Cincinnati tight end Josh Whyle, and the National team takes a timeout with five seconds left on the clock to run out the field goal unit. 

3:53 p.m. — Cunningham and his National teammates get the ball back with 35 seconds left on the clock. The drive gets out to a good start, with Hull running for 18 yards and Michigan's Ronnie Bell making a catch for 20 more.

3:51 p.m. — Duggan is sacked for a huge loss on 2nd down by Bowling Green's Karl Brooks. A Duggan keeper on 3rd and a mile comes up way short, so the American team will punt it away again as time winds down in the first half. 

3:46 p.m. — TCU's Max Duggan has now checked in at quarterback for the American team. What a season he had, leading his team to the national championship game against all odds. His day starts with a pair of completions to McIntosh and Mingo to move the chains. 

National 14, American 3

3:43 p.m. — The National team opts to go for two, and Cunningham tosses to an open Durham in the right side of the end zone to successfully convert!

3:42 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — That's not how they drew it up, but it'll work! Cunningham fumbles the snap, but he's able to scoop it up and lunge into the end zone for our first touchdown of the afternoon!

3:38 p.m. TWO-MINUTE WARNING — After a few more Thomspon runs, the National team is into the red zone. Cunningham throws left to Durham, who fights to break the plane of the goal line but is ruled out of bounds just a hair short. We've reached another two-minute warning with the National squad knocking on the door.

3:36 p.m. — Texas Tech RB SaRodorick Thompson Jr. rips off an 18 yard run to move the ball into American territory. 

3:30 p.m. — Louisville's Malik Cunningham has entered the game at QB for the National team, replacing Haener. On only his second snap, he flashes his speed with a nice 12-yard run to move the chains.  

National 6, American 3

3:28 p.m. FIELD GOAL — Georgia kicker Jack Podlesny boots it through from 35 yards to get the American squad on the board. 

3:27 p.m. — An attempt at a trick play gets blown up on 1st down, and Tune has to slide for no gain on 2nd. Facing 3rd and 11, Tune's pass to Wayne comes up short of the sticks. That will bring out the field goal unit.

3:25 p.m. — Tune connects with Oregon State tight end Luke Musgrave for 9 yards and another first down. Musgrave is a very highly-rated talent, and could see his name called on the first night of this year's draft.

3:22 p.m. — South Alabama WR Jalen Wayne, son of former NFL star Reggie Wayne, makes a catch and gets a nice round of applause from the fans at his home stadium. One play later, McIntosh runs to pick up a first down and keep the drive going. 

3:20 p.m. — The American squad turns to the run game to start the second quarter, with Gray and Kentucky RB Chris Rodriguez Jr. combining for a few nice gains on the ground. 

End of first quarter: National 6, American 0

3:15 p.m. FIELD GOAL — The first quarter ends with another Ryland field goal, this time from 37 yards. 

3:13 p.m. — Appalachian State RB Cameron Peoples drops two passes on back-to-back plays to bring up 3rd and 10. Both should have been easy catches, too. Unfortunate sequence there for Peoples. After a short catch and run by Hull, it's 4th and 6 and the National team will try a field goal with just a few seconds left on the clock.

3:12 p.m. — A short punt, plus a penalty, gives the National side fantastic field position near the American 23-yard line with 30 seconds left in the quarter. Let's see if they can add to their lead.

3:10 p.m. — Tune starts the drive with a short completion to Mingo, but has to throw it away on the next play. On 3rd and 7, another Tune pass falls incomplete and the American team will be forced to punt out of its own end zone.

3:08 p.m. — A Haener pass on 3rd and 9 misses its target and falls incomplete, bringing out the National team's punt unit for the first time today. 

3:06 p.m. — Chase Brown is here today with his brother and Illinois teammate, Sydney Brown. The Canadian duo are playing together once again as they audition for the NFL.  

3:03 p.m. TWO-MINUTE WARNING — Illinois RB Chase Brown rumbles for a few yards and another first down, and that'll take us to the two-minute warning. That's right, there will be a two-minute warning in every quarter of this game. Possession will switch at the end of each quarter, essentially allowing the scouts in attendance to see how all of the players out there handle clock management situations. 

3:01 p.m. — On 3rd and 4, Haener makes a great throw over the middle to a crossing Jayden Reed. The Michigan State receiver catches and runs up to the 32-yard line to keep the drive alive. 

3:00 p.m. — Who will take home the MVP award today?

2:58 p.m. — A great punt by Rutgers' Adam Korsak and some good special teams play leads to the ball being downed at the 1-yard line. That's where the National team will start its second offensive drive of the day.

2:57 p.m. — They do go for it, and it looks briefly like they got a big gain, but an offensive hands to the face penalty will bring it back. The American team will be forced to punt this one away.

2:55 p.m. — Georgia RB Kenny McIntosh drops a pass that hit him right in the hands, and the American side faces 3rd and 10. A short gain on a catch by Oklahoma RB Eric Gray brings up 4th and 4, but it looks like the offense will stay on the field to go for this. 

2:53 p.m. — A few plays later, Tune throws a strike to Ole Miss WR Jonathan Mingo for a gain of 15 yards to move the ball across midfield. 

2:51 p.m. — Houston's Clayton Tune starts the game at QB for the American team. On the first play of the drive, he throws a short pass to Alabama tight end Cameron Late for a quick gain of 11. 

National 3, American 0

2:48 p.m. FIELD GOAL — Maryland kicker Chad Ryland knocks it through from 32 yards out to open the scoring for the afternoon. The biggest star on that drive was definitely Hull, who showed off his powerful running style on a few big plays. 

2:46 p.m. — On 3rd and goal, UNC-Charlotte wide receiver Grant DuBose gets called for a suspect offensive pass interference penalty to wipe a touchdown off the board. Haener's pass to Wilson goes incomplete on the following play, so this will be a field goal try.

2:44 p.m. — A Haener throw to Purdue tight end Payne Durham sets up 1st and goal. 

2:42 p.m. — Hull pushes the pile on another nice run to move the ball into the red zone for the National squad. 

2:40 p.m. — On the first play from scrimmage, Northwestern RB Evan Hull takes the handoff and bursts through the line to pick up about 25 yards. He took a big hit at the end of that play, but looks alright. On the next play, Fresno State QB Jake Haener zips a pass to Stanford WR Michael Wilson to pick up another big chunk of yardage.

2:38 p.m. — The National team will receive the ball first to start this game.

2:32 p.m. — NFL Draft season has unofficially begun. Kickoff in the 2023 Senior Bowl is just moments away.

2:20 p.m. — Today's game will feature two teams, American and National, that are made up of some of the top senior NFL Draft prospects from the NCAA. They'll be looking to show off their talents in front of a large group of assembled NFL scouts. 

2:07 p.m. — It's a beautiful day in Mobile.

The game is scheduled to kick off at 2:30 p.m. ET (1:30 p.m. local time) from Hancock Whitney Stadium in Mobile, Ala. The stadium is home to South Alabama during the college football season. 

The weather forecast calls for a beautiful day on the Gulf Coast, with sunny skies and temperatures around 60 degrees Fahrenheit.
