Did Baker Mayfield's redemption arc begin Thursday night? After the Rams claimed the former No. 1 pick off waivers on Tuesday, he stepped in and snapped the team's six-game losing streak with a wild comeback to beat the Raiders 17-16.

Mayfield didn't even start the game, though the decision to start John Wolford appeared to be nothing more than gamesmanship by Sean McVay. Mayfield entered on the Rams' second drive.

The Rams' defense helped keep the game within reach, but any hopes of a win seemed distant when the Raiders went up 16-3 early in the fourth quarter. Mayfield struggled through the third quarter, as you'd expect from a quarterback who barely knows his own teammates, but he led a nine-minute touchdown drive in the fourth quarter to trim the Rams' deficit to six.

Los Angeles got the stop it needed to give Mayfield a chance, stuffing Josh Jacobs on third down, and the magic began. The Rams needed to make up 98 yards in two minutes, but a pair of early penalties by the Raiders helped jumpstart the drive.

Mayfield hit Ben Skowronek for a 32-yard gain to take the Rams into Raiders territory, and a couple short passes set up an outstanding 23-yard touchdown reception by Van Jefferson. Taylor Rapp intercepted Derek Carr seconds later to seal the win.

While Mayfield's resurgent night is the story — rightfully so — the loss marks a third double-digit collapse by the Raiders this season. At 5-8, any hopes Las Vegas had of a late-season run to the playoffs are now on ice.

The Rams' chances aren't any better in fact, they would've been eliminated if not for the furious comeback — but Mayfield injected some much-needed life into a profoundly underwhelming season for the reigning champions.

When Mayfield takes the field against Aaron Rodgers in Week 15, it might be much more entertaining than anyone expected.

Raiders vs. Rams live updates, highlights from 'Thursday Night Football'

(All times Eastern)

Final: Rams 17, Raiders 16

11:18 p.m. INTERCEPTION — This one is OVER. Taylor Rapp intercepts Carr and seals a stunning win for the Rams. What a game, and what a moment for Baker Mayfield.

Rams 17, Raiders 16

11:15 p.m. — The extra point is GOOD. Rams lead, and the Raiders need a miracle.

11:14 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — Unreal! Mayfield hits Van Jefferson for the touchdown! It's a tie game, and Matt Gay is coming on for the go-ahead extra point with nine seconds left.

11:13 p.m. — Two quick throws by Mayfield have the Rams at the 25-yard line. This is where the lack of timeouts hurts: They only have 15 seconds to work with.

11:12 p.m. — Oh man. Skowronek looked like Cooper Kupp on that play and somehow hauled in a pass to take the Rams into Raiders territory.

11:11 p.m. — Maxx Crosby comes in and contributes to a sack of Mayfield, but Jerry Tillery commits an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty to move the Rams up. Senseless mistake.

11:10 p.m. — Mayfield's pass ends up in the hands of a Raiders defender, but a pass-interference penalty keeps the drive alive and moves the Rams up.

11:08 p.m. — The Rams will have to go 98 yards after a terrific punt by A.J. Cole. That punt may seal a win for the Raiders, especially with the Rams' lack of timeouts. Let's see...

11:06 p.m. TWO-MINUTE WARNING — A Jacobs run makes it 3rd & 1 for the Raiders, but the Rams stuff him on the next play and get the stop they needed. Baker Mayfield will have a chance...

Raiders 16, Rams 10

10:59 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — Akers pushes forward for the touchdown after his impressive first down catch. The Rams make this a one-score game and now need a quick stop to have a chance. Only 3:19 on the clock.

10:58 p.m. — Akers just barely gets the first down and has the Rams inside the one-yard line.

10:57 p.m. — 4th & 1 coming here for the Rams after a timeout. Mayfield has been impressive in the red zone, but they need this conversion of course.

10:54 p.m. — Wow, another third down conversion by Mayfield. He hits Atwell with a high pass to prevent a 4th & Long scenario. The Rams are inching closer to the end zone.

10:51 p.m. — Maxx Crosby gifts the Rams a first down by jumping too early...that's the second first down by penalty for LA on this drive.

10:50 p.m. — There wasn't enough to overturn the catch by Skowronek. The ball hit the ground, but he seemed to have complete control before that point. A huge 3rd & 4 for the Rams.

10:48 p.m. — The Raiders are challenging a six-yard reception by Skowronek, so we're in a holding pattern. The Rams would face 3rd & 10 if the catch is overturned.

10:45 p.m. — A couple nice plays get the Rams the first down anyway. Ben Skowronek with a 14-yard gain to get LA over midfield.

10:44 p.m. — Flags everywhere. Now a holding penalty erases an impressive throw to Van Jefferson.

10:42 p.m. — Finally, a positive moment for the Rams. The Raiders commit two penalties on the punt, including an offsides call that gives LA an automatic first down.

10:41 p.m. — Mayfield throws downfield on third down and badly overshoots Atwell. The Rams are punting on 4th & 3 despite trailing by two touchdowns.

Raiders 16, Rams 3

10:37 p.m. FIELD GOAL — The Rams make another defensive stand, but the points are starting to pile up for the Raiders as Daniel Carlson makes it 16-3. Los Angeles is down two touchdowns with 12:20 remaining.

10:33 p.m. — The Raiders are moving very methodically, and it's working. They're on the edge of the red zone.

End of third quarter: Raiders 13, Rams 3

10:28 p.m. — Jacobs is playing through some discomfort, but he's now over 100 scrimmage yards on the night. He's closing in on 1,400 rushing yards with four games still on the schedule.

10:26 p.m. — Josh Jacobs is back in the game for the Raiders.

10:23 p.m. — Everything is going wrong for the Rams now. A personal foul backs LA up 15 yards, and Matt Gay's attempt from 61 yards out misses. That was offensive lineman Coleman Shelton with the ugly mistake.

10:22 p.m. — A nice catch-and-run by Atwell is erased by a holding penalty, which sets the Rams back to 3rd & 16. LA's offense has been brutal this half aside from the pass-interference call.

10:19 p.m. — Mayfield throws all the way downfield and picks up a huge pass-interference call. It was an overthrow, but Tutu Atwell sells the penalty by Trevon Moehrig to push the Rams well into Raiders territory.

10:14 p.m. — Another defensive stop by the Rams as Carr overshoots Adams on third down. The Raiders will punt again.

10:12 p.m. — Jacobs is in the x-ray room, so it'll be Zamir White and Ameer Abdullah in the Raiders' backfield on this drive. White runs for eight yards on the opening snap.

10:09 p.m. — Mayfield gets sacked again, and the Rams will punt. He's just 4-of-12 passing in his LA debut, including 2 for his last 9.

10:07 p.m. — Jacobs is dealing with a finger injury, which will be something to keep an eye on when the Raiders get the ball back. He had his fingers taped up on the sideline.

10:05 p.m. — A couple nice runs by Kyren Williams to open the Rams' drive. It'll be worth monitoring how much his usage ticks up after Akers' fumble.

10:02 p.m. — The Raiders can't overcome an early holding penalty and opt to punt on 4th & 1. That's a testament to Josh McDaniels' lack of confidence in the Rams' offense.

10:00 p.m. — Jacobs comes up hobbling at the end of a 15-yard run. There was some concern he fumbled, but his elbow was clearly down before any movement by the ball. Jacobs is up to 73 rushing yards tonight.

9:55 p.m. — A long delay to review multiple penalties on the Rams' punt results in a re-kick. The Raiders will have the ball near their own 40-yard line.

9:51 p.m. — Mayfield barely escapes another sack on second down, but a 3rd & 19 play goes nowhere after he bobbles the snap.

9:50 p.m. — Bilal Nichols notches the first sack of the game, setting the Rams back with 2nd & 19.

9:49 p.m. — Mayfield keeps the drive alive, finding Austin Trammell for a sliding first down grab.

End of first half: Raiders 13, Rams 3

9:33 p.m. — The Rams can't get anything going in the final minute and opt to take this one to halftime. They'll get the ball to open the second half and need some points.

9:28 p.m. INTERCEPTION — That's a killer for the Raiders. Carr floats a pass into the end zone under pressure, and Ernest Jones has all day to catch it. The Rams survive another long Raiders drive.

9:25 p.m. — Davante Adams hasn't been as involved as Jacobs tonight, but he's been fantastic. Adams makes a great catch along the sidelines to put the Raiders in the red zone.

9:23 p.m. — The Mack Hollins end-around is apparently the play of the night for the Raiders. This one doesn't get the first down, but it does get Las Vegas closer.

9:20 p.m. TWO-MINUTE WARNING — The Raiders are still in their own territory, so they might need to pick up the tempo if they want to get in the end zone before the end of the half.

9:18 p.m. — The Raiders' drive opens with two Jacobs runs and a Jacobs reception. He looks healthy.

9:14 p.m. FUMBLE — One step forward, two steps back for Cam Akers, who fumbles the ball away to the Raiders in Las Vegas territory. He wastes a huge opportunity for the Rams.

9:13 p.m. — Mayfield makes the big throw, hitting Ben Skowronek for a 22-yard gain. The Rams are in business.

9:12 p.m. — The Rams are headed backwards now after losing yardage on back-to-back plays. They need a big throw here from Mayfield.

9:10 p.m. — Mayfield finds Atwell for a 22-yard gain after Atwell turns and runs for a few extra yards. That's the Rams' second completion of the game.

9:08 p.m. — Cam Akers is looking solid so far with 25 yards on six carries. He takes the handoff on the first three plays of this Rams drive.

Raiders 13, Rams 3

9:03 p.m. FIELD GOAL — A low pass from Derek Carr to DJ Turner is dropped, and the Rams once again force a field goal. LA's offense will have to respond after a nice stand by the defense.

9:01 p.m. — The Raiders are into the red zone after a sideline grab by Keelan Cole. McDaniels has done a pretty great job drawing up this offense tonight. He has a chance to make the lead much more comfortable here.

8:58 p.m. — The Raiders continue to use Mack Hollins creatively. Another end-around goes for 16 yards to put Las Vegas in business.

End of first quarter: Raiders 10, Rams 3

Raiders 10, Rams 3

8:52 p.m. FIELD GOAL — McVay opts for a 55-yard field goal attempt and gets it right. Both kickers have connected from 52+ yards out so far, and the Rams pull back within a possession.

8:51 p.m. — It looked for a few seconds like the officials were ready to call Nate Hobbs for pass-interference, but there's no penalty on a 3rd & 4 incompletion. Fourth down decision coming...

8:49 p.m. — Mayfield quickly throws a nice pass to Van Jefferson for a first down and more. Impressive start.

8:48 p.m. — There's the man! Baker Mayfield is under center to start the Rams' second drive. Sean McVay wasted no time.

Raiders 10, Rams 0

8:44 p.m. FIELD GOAL  — The Rams are able to force a 52-yard field goal attempt from Daniel Carlson, who drills it. Las Vegas goes up by two possessions.

8:41 p.m. — A nice pass from Carr to Hollins pushes the Raiders into Rams territory. Hollins is quietly approaching 600 yards this season.

8:39 p.m. — An end-around to Mack Hollins works better than Tutu Atwell's did. Hollins picks up 17 yards for the Raiders.

8:38 p.m. — Carr comes under pressure is nearly intercepted on first down. He's lucky to get away with that one.

8:33 p.m. — The Rams quickly waste Akers' nice run. Maxx Crosby blows up an end-around to Tutu Atwell on third down and forces a punt.

8:32 p.m. — Cam Akers will be a big part of the Rams' gameplan tonight, and he runs for more than nine yards on LA's opening snap.

Raiders 7, Rams 0

8:27 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — Jacobs is already making fantasy owners happy as he runs right in for the touchdown. Josh McDaniels scripted that opening drive well. Can Sean McVay answer?

8:26 p.m. — Jacobs already has six touches tonight, and his latest now has the Raiders deep inside the red zone after an 11-yard gain.

8:23 p.m. — A catch-and-run by Ameer Abdullah has the Raiders nearing the red zone.

8:20 p.m. — Josh Jacobs' usage tonight will be interesting. Jacobs was limited in practice all week but has been unstoppable of late. He took the handoff on the opening snap for the Raiders.

8:18 p.m. — Wow, a beautiful one-handed catch by Davante Adams on third down. No receiver has been better than Adams over the last few weeks, Justin Jefferson aside (maybe).

8:16 p.m. — The Rams are kicking off to the Raiders, and we are underway.

8:12 p.m. — It's looking like John Wolford will get the start for the Rams, but Mayfield is active and could see some playing time.

8:03 p.m. — We still don't know the Rams' quarterback plans tonight, but Mayfield is suited up in royal blue for the first time.

7:41 p.m. — Chandler Jones is coming off a three-sack game against the Chargers and has another big opportunity against a shaky Rams offensive line.

7:19 p.m. — New addition Baker Mayfield is warming up for the Rams. Whether he starts reportedly depends on the health of John Wolford, who's attempting to play through a neck injury.
