Deebo Samuel has struck gold.

The 49ers and the wide receiver ending a months-long drama on Sunday night, with San Francisco's front office ponying up the cash to keep their No. 1 target locked into 49ers for the next few years.

Samuel joins the list of recently paid wide receivers to get big-money extensions: A.J. Brown, Davante Adams and Tyreek Hill each got new deals this offseason — as well as new teams.

The biggest difference: Samuel and the 49ers worked through the issues and keep the star offensive weapon in red and gold for the next three seasons, and deservedly so. Samuel is coming off a monster season, totaling 1,770 scrimmage yards and 14 total touchdowns, as part of a squad that made a run all the way to the NFC championship game.

Here's how Samuel's deal breaks down:

Deebo Samuel contract details

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Samuel is inking a three-year, $71.55 million extension with $58.1 million guaranteed over the life of the deal. The extension can be worth up to $73.5 million max, Rapoport reports.

Samuel was entering the last year of his rookie contract in 2023: He was selected in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft, meaning there was no fifth-year option tied to his deal, with this year the fourth and final on the books for San Francisco.

By the time the extension is up, Samuel will be 29 years old, and could potential ink another big-money contract. The extension runs through the 2025 season.

Also worth noting is that Samuel is making a fair amount of money off of his potential usage. Samuel reportedly did not want to work as a running back, as he was used last year with the 49ers.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Samuel will receive:

  • $650,000 per year for each year he has 380 or more rushing yarads.
  • $150,000 if he scores three rushing TDs in any one season.

Samuel, 26, had requested a trade earlier in the offseason, with the relationship between the player and the team seemingly irreparable, which included the WR scrubbing the 49ers from his social media. The Jets were the hottest after Samuel, with the two sides engaging in trade talks all the way up to the 2022 NFL Draft. Reports indicated that the 49ers turned down the deal, though there were conflicting reports surrounding the circumstances. The Lions were also in on Samuel's services.

As recently as June, reports said Samuel did not rescind his trade request, but 49ers pleased to see him participating, nonetheless.

Now, his murky future is much less that, and much more green.
