USC vs. Utah final score, results: Utes dash Trojans' playoff hopes with blowout win in Pac-12 championship

It was easy to look at Friday's Pac-12 championship as a coronation of sorts for Caleb Williams and No. 4 USC. The Trojans had gone from strength-to-strength throughout the regular season — their only blemish a one-point loss to Utah back in October.

A playoff spot was in their sights. Someone forgot to tell the Utes, though.

Fueled by swarming defense, a strong run game and a gutsy display by floppy-hair fireball Cameron Rising, No. 11 Utah rolled, thrashing USC 47-24 en route to its second straight conference title.

It was the sort of display that seemed unfathomable for much of the season, particularly given the Trojans' high-powered offense. Lincoln Riley's attacking unit looked every bit as imposing as advertised in the opening frame, quickly racing out to a 17-3 lead.

But Riley's ambition got the best of him. After giving the ball away needlessly on a turnover on downs in their own territory, the Utes got a quick score. Soon, Rising and company found their rhythm. At which point, Williams found the turf.

The sacks were plentiful for the standout sophomore, who hobbled through the last two quarters on a bum leg. Fueled by a stout defensive showing — Utah allowed just seven points in the game's final 30 minutes — it was the Utes dancing under streams of confetti when the game ended. One has to imagine similar celebrations were sparked in Columbus and Tuscaloosa, as well.

USC vs. Utah live updates, highlights from Pac-12 championship

(All times Eastern)

11:45 p.m.: The clock will run out! Sensational display by Utah, who crashes USC's playoff hopes with a 47-24 win in the Pac-12 championship.

11:41 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN! The beating gets worse for USC. Micah Bernard skewers the Trojans defense for another score, adding on to the beatdown.

Utah 47, USC 24

11:39 p.m.: FUMBLE! The bludgeoning continues...Williams goes down again after Utah's pass rush breaks through the trenches, sending the ball tumbling down the field. Utah recovers and it looks like the Utes are going to put this one on ice.

Fans in Tuscaloosa and Columbus are licking their lips, undoubtedly.

11:36 p.m.: Williams falls to the turf once more! The pressure has been swarming on the Heisman hopeful, who is moving like he's stuck in quicksand. What a performance by the Utes.

11:31 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN! Another longgg touchdown for the Utes, this time courtesy of Jackson. The freshman running back scampers through the hole and takes it 53 yards to the house, yet another seismic shock to the Trojans' playoff chances.

Utes miss the extra point, but there's not too much time left for Williams and the Trojans to get back in it. A little over five minutes to go.

Utah 40, USC 24

11:28 p.m.: INTERCEPTION! Blink and you'll miss it: Williams with just his fourth pick of the season, tossing an errant pass right into the path of senior leader RJ Hubert. Backbreaker for the Trojans.

11:26 p.m.: And Williams makes a little magic happen on fourth down! Wonderful throw on the run to reigning Biletnikoff Award winner Jordan Addison. That's a 48-yard gain, putting the Trojans right on the brink of the end zone.

11:17 p.m.: Pressure is on the Trojans' offense. The game is getting dangerously close to getting out of hand. Need a score here.

11:10 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN! The Utes grab another six, this time courtesy of a Rising connection with Thomas Yasmin. Double-digit edge for Utah. USC's playoff hopes slipping before our very eyes.

11:04 p.m.: Williams tucks and runs for the first, the first time he's really showed off the wheels since going down for that sack early in the third. It's been tough sledding for the star sophomore, who has looked worst for the wear for much of the second half.

11:00 p.m.: FIELD GOAL! Jadon Redding splits the uprights from 35 yards out, extending the Utes' lead to 10.

Utah 27, USC 17

End of third quarter

10:55 p.m.: The Utes fall just short of the first down marker on third down. Looks like they'll be sending the field goal team out at the start of the fourth.

10:49 p.m.: Rising takes a mammoth blow on the QB keeper, knocking his helmet off. Looked to be on the precipice of a targeting penalty. No whistle blown, though. We'll let you decide:

10:45 p.m.: The ball slips through Washington's hands on third down, prompting yet another pump. Just that type of day for USC.

10:42 p.m.: Trojans with their backs to the shadow of their own end zone. Gotta get something started sooner rather than later.

10:33 p.m.: Everything is getting a little more rushed for Williams. After taking another sack, the Trojans are forced to once more punt the ball back to the Utes. Not ideal.

10:29 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN! Rising makes the Trojans pay! He slings the ball into Money Parks grasp, who does the rest, crossing through the defense before finding the end zone from 57 yards out. Beware of the big play.

Utah 24, USC 17

10:27 p.m.: Rising fires a pass toward the sidelines and it's...nearly intercepted by Mekhi Blackmon! The senior gets his mitt on the errant throw, but it fell harmlessly out of his hand. Unfortunate for the Trojans.

10:23 p.m.: Utah's defense holds firm, putting Williams on the canvas. After yet another three and out, the ball is headed back to Utah.

10:18 p.m.: That vaunted Trojans defense flexed its strength on the opening possession, stuffing Utah en route to a three and out. That's got to be encouraging given the Utes' success moving the ball at the end of the first half.

10:15 p.m.: USC boots the ball in the end zone for a touchback. The Utes are back on the field.

End of first half

9:50 p.m.: While the Trojans seemingly appeared unstoppable to start the game, the second quarter belonged to the Utah Utes. Knowing what's at stake, Utah climbed back from a 14-3 hole at the end of the first quarter to tie the game at 17 at the half.

While Utah bled the clock on the majority of their drives in the first half, their final one went 81 yards in 1:38, ending in a Cameron Rising touchdown pass to Jaylen Dixon.

USC 17, Utah 17

9:28 p.m.: The Utes muscled their way down the field, using their run game to earn a much-needed answer and cut into USC's lead, going 63 yards in 6:33 ending in a Ja'Quinden Jackson run for 8 yards and a touchdown.

USC 17, Utah 10

9:17 p.m.: USC was unable to capitalize off the turnover. With the drive stalled and in no-man's land-- too far for a field goal, but not enough room to punt it-- the Trojans were unsuccessful in their 4th down attempt. Utah takes over near midfield.

9:14 p.m.: The Utes can't catch a break. Cameron Rising completed a pass to Jaylen Dixon for 19 yards, in which Dixon promptly fumbled it and was recovered by USC Bryson Shaw.

9:08 p.m.: The Trojans cannot be stopped to open the game. After a quick 3-and-out for the Utes, USC moved down the field with ease. Their effort to find the end zone fell short, however. Lincoln Riley called the offense off the field, electing for a field goal, increasing his team's lead.

USC 17, Utah, 3

8:52 p.m.: Caleb Williams was evaluated in the medical tent with a hand injury. He cut it on the helmet of a teammate during the follow-through of a pass. Williams returned at the start of USC's next possession.

8:50 p.m.: For the second time in two possessions, USC went for it on 4th down. This time, the Trojans did so knocking on the door of the end zone. Once again, Caleb Williams answered the call, connecting with Raleek Williams for a 4-yard strike.

USC 14, Utah 3

8:46 p.m.: USC QB rips off a 59-yard gainer, putting the Trojans right back into the red zone

8:44 p.m.: On their first possession, Utah marched down the field, but USC’s stout red zone defense kept the Utes out of the end zone. Jadon Redding put three points on the board for Utah, ending a 12 play, 68 yard drive, which took 5:18 off the clock.

USC 7, Utah 3

8:30 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN! Williams finds Washington once more to break the deadlock! Wonderful drive by the Trojans early.

USC 7, Utah 0

8:27 p.m.: Big play hunting by Riley and the men of Troy! Williams connects with Tahj Washington for a 48-yard gain! There's that Heisman-caliber arm shining through!

8:25 p.m.: Williams gets the first down! Big show of faith by Riley and the Trojans coaching staff.

8:24 p.m.: Lincoln Riley already showing some ambition. He's got the offense back on the field for fourth down. We'll see how this goes.

8:23 p.m.: A pair of intermediate gains puts USC in a third and short situation.

8:22 p.m.: Williams with a spicy ten yard scramble to start the proceedings. Showing off the wheels early.

8:20 p.m.: The ball is kicked off! The Pac-12 Championship is underway!

8:17 p.m.: USC is on the field! Caleb Williams is hoping to cap off a phenomenal season with a Pac-12 title — and a College Football Playoff appearance.

8:14 p.m.: The Utes are out on the field! Fourth ever Pac-12 title game appearance. They'll be hoping to capture their second straight conference championship.
