Taking it on the chin: Even best programs get blown out

Since 1998 — the first season of the BCS — 11 different schools have won national championships.

And don't think for one second that each of those teams hasn't been handed a thorough beating.

OK, maybe not  as bad  as Miami suffered Saturday against Clemson, but they've all been on the wrong side of a lopsided scoreboard.

Here's a look at those 11 teams and their worst loss — we're talking scoreboard — since 1998.

Alabama

Alabama

Worst loss: Arkansas 42, Alabama 6

When: Sept. 26, 1998

Since we're talking about it: It was ugly. The Razorbacks led just 14-6 at the half but scored 21 points in the fourth quarter to rout Alabama, which entered the week ranked No. 22 in the AP poll in Mike DuBose's second season. Alabama managed just seven first downs, 48 rushing yards and 152 total yards.

Auburn

Auburn

Worst loss: Alabama 49, Auburn 0

When: Nov. 24, 2012

Since we're talking about it: Alabama scored on each of its six first half possessions and its first to start the second half and dominated this Iron Bowl in every stat imaginable. Auburn finished the season 3-9, Gene Chizik was fired and Gus Malzahn was hired. The following season, Auburn made a complete about face — going from 0-8 in SEC play to 7-1 — and played for the BCS championship, losing to FSU 34-31 on a TD pass in the game's final seconds.

Florida

Florida

Worst loss: FSU 37, Florida 7

When: Nov. 30, 2013

Since we're talking about it: The Gators also lost by 30 points to LSU (41-11 in 2011), but we're going with the FSU loss for a couple of reasons. First, the loss capped a seven-game losing streak to the season — Florida finished 4-8 a season after beating the Seminoles and going 11-2. Also, it was a season of firsts for Florida: first losing season since 1979 and first season not going to a bowl since 1990.

Florida State

Florida State

Worst loss: Oregon 59, Florida State 20

When: Jan. 1, 2015

Since we're talking about it: A year after winning the final championship of the BCS era, Florida State went undefeated and locked up one of the four spots in the first College Football Playoff. But something seemed a little off during the season for the Seminoles and it call came to light against the Ducks. FSU turned the ball over five times and the Marcus Mariota-led Ducks outscored the Noles 41-7 in the second half to reach the CFP title game.

LSU

LSU

Worst loss: Auburn 41, LSU 7

When: Sept. 18, 1999

Since we're talking about it: Auburn also beat LSU 41-7 in 2014, but this one led to change in Baton Rouge. First, about the game. Here's how LSU's first half drives ended: interception, punt, punt, fumble, interception, punt, missed field goal, interception, interception. That's four picks if you lost count and Auburn led just 24-0 at the half. Gerry DiNardo was fired at the end of the season and LSU hired Nick Saban and won a national title in 2003.

Miami

Miami

Worst loss: Clemson 58, Miami 0

When: Oct. 24, 2015

Since we're talking about it: Let's just throw out a few numbers: first downs (6), total yards (146), third-down conversions (4-18). The Tigers led 42-0 at halftime in Miami. There was no swagger with The U on Saturday.

Ohio State

Ohio State

Worst loss: USC 35, Ohio State 3

When: Sept. 13, 2008

Since we're talking about it: The fifth-ranked Buckeyes traveled to play No. 12 USC and the game never lived up to the billing. A foot injury kept Ohio State star RB Beanie Wells out of the game. But mistakes did in the Buckeyes in the first half. A penalty negated a TD pass and USC LB Ray Maualuga returned a Todd Boeckman pass for a score as the Trojans raced to a 21-3 halftime lead.

Oklahoma

Oklahoma

Worst loss: USC 55, Oklahoma 19

When: Jan. 4, 2005

Since we're talking about it: USC and Oklahoma began the season ranked 1-2 and both teams ran the table and into the BCS Championship Game. That's where the fun ended for the Sooners. Matt Leinart threw five TD passes and Jason White threw three interceptions as USC led 38-10 at the half and college football's biggest game turned into its biggest laugher.

Tennessee

Tennessee

Worst loss: Oregon 59, Tennessee 14

When: Sept. 14, 2013

Since we're talking about it: Tennessee did first-year coach Butch Jones no favors by scheduling the high-powered Ducks in the third game of the season. The Vols led 7-0 and Oregon then reeled off 59 consecutive points. Marcus Mariota threw for 456 yards and four touchdowns and ran for another in the mismatch.

Texas

Texas

Worst loss: Oklahoma 65, Texas 13

When: Oct. 11, 2003

Since we're talking about it: First, the Sooners were good in 2000 — so good that they beat FSU 13-2 to win the BCS title. But Texas wasn't bad. The Longhorns finished 9-3 and this was their only Big 12 loss. But it was bad: Texas managed just 10 first downs and 154 total yards.

USC

USC

Worst loss: Stanford 55, USC 21

When: Nov. 14, 2009

Since we're talking about it: The Cardinal broke open a tight game with a 27-point four quarter. Andrew Luck hit Coby Fleener for a score, Richard Sherman returned a Matt Barkley interception for a TD and Tyler Gaffney and Toby Gerhart scored on TD runs. The loss was the first loss at home in November for USC coach Pete Carroll in the past 28 games.
