Before Auriemma became a UConn and college basketball coaching legend, he started as an assistant coach for Saint Joseph's back in 1978.

1978-79: Saint Joseph's assistant coach

Auriemma spent one season as an assistant coach for the Saint Joseph's women's basketball program. They finished with a 16-19 overall record.

1981-85: Virgnia assistant coach

Following one season at Saint Joseph's, Auriemma took an assistant coaching job at his former high school, Bishop Kenrick, for three seasons.

In 1981, he joined Virginia's women's basketball program as an assistant from 1981-1985. The Cavaliers won one ACC regular season title and made two NCAA Tournament appearances with Auriemma as an assistant.

1985-Present: UConn head coach

UConn hired Auriemma to be its women's basketball head coach in 1985, and the rest was history.

11 NCAA championships, 23 Final Four appearances, 27 conference tournament championships and a laundry list of Coach of the Year awards later, Auriemma has submitted a Hall of Fame-worthy career over 39 seasons in Storrs.

He has tallied the most wins in NCAA basketball history with 1,213 and counting.

During this span, he also served as the United States women's national team head coach, collecting five gold medals between Olympic and FIBA World Championship play.
