North Wilkesboro Speedway

Nostalgia, with hints of burnt rubber.

NASCAR has had many homes over the course of its 75-year history. But few have captivated fans more than North Wilkesboro Speedway,

The 0.625-mile short track endeared itself to drivers and spectators alike as it hosted some 93 Cup races from 1949-96. And although the track has been closed for the better part of 30 years, it still holds a certain weight in the world of stock car racing.

With the track undergoing significant renovations over the past decade, North Wilkesboro has returned to the public consciousness. Now, it returns to the Cup Series calendar, too: the storied surface will host this year's All-Star Race.

The $1 million prize up for grabs in the main event may be small compared to the payouts winners receive for capturing the checkered flag during the regular season. But the glory of rolling into victory lane at North Wilkesboro — and joining the likes of Richard Petty, Darrell Waltrip, Dale Earnhardt and other legends? Well, that's priceless.
