The Cup Series returns to Charlotte Motor Speedway this week for the Coca-Cola 600, one of the crown jewels of NASCAR's seasonal calendar.

Those attending will be welcomed by a familiar face. He'll be in different digs this time around, however.

Jimmie Johnson is slated to participate in Sunday's race, driving the No. 84 car for Richard Petty-owned Legacy Motor Club. It's the second race Johnson is taking part in this year; he manned the cockpit in the No. 84 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 at Daytona and COTA earlier in the year.

Johnson didn't fare too well on the road course, finishing last after getting collected in a multi-car wreck. Still, he's among the best drivers in Charlotte's history; his four Coca-Cola 600 wins ranks second in Cup Series history, trailing only Darrell Waltrip (with five).

Here's what you need to know as Johnson searches for victory No. 5 at the Queen City track.

Why is Jimmie Johnson racing at Charlotte?

Johnson returns to the fore for this weekend's race, joining Noah Gragson and Erik Jones as Legacy Motor Club's representatives in this year's Coca-Cola 600.

At 47 years old, Johnson is the oldest racer in the field. He's also the most accomplished, having captured seven Cup Series titles. Five of them came consecutively.

Legacy Motor Club hasn't been in victory lane since its rebrand from Petty GMS last year. It only has two top-ten finishes to date and has lagged behind many of its other competitors.

Johnson, who owns a stake in the team, offers a veteran presence for Gragson and Jones to look up to. He also may present the best chance for Legacy to work its way up to the front of the pack come Sunday.

Johnson will participate in at least one more race after Sunday. He announced he'd drive the No. 84 car in the inaugural Chicago road race in July.

Why is Jimmie Johnson driving the No. 84 car?

Johnson's iconic No. 48 is taken; Hendrick Motorsports protege Alex Bowman has donned it since 2020. As such, Johnson had to get creative when figuring out his next number.

He settled on No. 84, the reverse of his storied number. Speaking to Fox Sports, he explained his mindset behind choosing his newest digits.

"The number four, the number eight have always been significant numbers for me," Johnson said, adding, "They're two numbers I can't live without."

He'll have them with his as he makes his way around the track on Sunday.
