Ilia Topuria is ready to prove he’s not just another opponent that Alexander Volkanovski can easily put away at UFC 298 on February 17. The fight in California for Volkanovski’s UFC featherweight title airs on ESPN+ PPV in the U.S.

Volkanovski turned pro in 2012. Joining the UFC in 2016, he is 13-2 with the promotion. Beating Max Holloway in 2019 for the UFC featherweight title, Volkanovski has successfully defended the belt five times, twice against Holloway. The Aussie’s last title defense was a TKO win in July against Yair Rodriguez.

Topuria turned pro in 2015. The Georgian and Spanish fighter joined the UFC in 2020 and is 6-0 for the promotion. In his last contest in June, "El Matador" beat Josh Emmett via unanimous decision.

Volkanovski is 1-2 in his last three fights, the losses coming at lightweight against Islam Makhachev. At featherweight, he has dominated the competition. The Aussie sees Topuria as just someone in his way and has dared the latter to prove him wrong.

"He needs to do something February to show elite level. Because, right now, I haven't seen it," Volkanovski said on the MMA Hour via MMA News. "That doesn't mean he's not elite... But, there's gonna be levels where you need to be more than just fundamentally sound… I haven't seen him do anything more special than any other of the guys I've faced. That doesn't mean he's not that good, but he needs to show me that. With the striking, again, durable, powerful dude, very fundamentally sound... But again, it's so much more than that. I'll leave it at that.”
