Alex Volkanovski's reign as UFC featherweight champion was ended in brutal fashion by Ilia Topuria at UFC 298 in Anaheim, California.

Topuria promised to knock out the Australian in the first or second round and he did just that, closing the show with a big right hand mid-way through the second period.

After a close opening round, Volkanovski looked as if he may be getting on top but Topuria's power proved the difference, shutting the 35-year-old's lights out with the first significant punch he landed.

The result sees Volkanovski stopped for the second time in as many fights after Islam Makhachev KO'd him at lightweight last time out.

Topuria, who moved to Spain at a young age, becomes that nation's first UFC champion.

"I feel so happy right now," Topuria said.

"I just know my skills. I worked so hard for this, I always knew, one day I would become UFC champion.

"I just had to throw a lot of punches in this fight, long combinations and this is what I did."

After his victory, Topuria said he wished to headline an event in Spain in what would be the company's first visit to the country.

"Well done to him, he caught me," a dejected Volkanovski said.

"I was going to start working everything and he got me, credit to him.

"Obviously he's a hard-hitter, we knew that going in, he wasn't meant to land like that, but he did, credit to him."

"The Great" then confirmed that he'd be happy to take on Topuria again in his adopted home country:

"I've been champion of this featherweight division for a long time, he keeps mentioning Spain, maybe we do a rematch over there in Spain."

In the co-main event, Rob Whittaker got Australian fighters on the board with a close unanimous decision victory over Paulo Costa.

Whittaker was made to earn it by the Brazilian, eating a wheel kick late in the opening round, but the Sydneysider did just enough to claim a points win and ensure he remains in the middleweight title picture.
