Party like it's 1998.

The Padres and Yankees have met a number of times since the Bombers swept the Dads in the World Series 25 years ago, but the next time the two franchises hope to meet after this weekend will be in the Fall Classic once again. There is, though, a long road to get there, and the teams find themselves on much different footing.

The Yankees are starting to get hot after an inauspicious start to the season. With reinforcements on the horizon, the American League East isn't as out of reach as it previously seemed, especially if Giancarlo Stanton returns to the lineup sooner, rather than later.

The Padres are underachieving in 2023. At 23-27 entering Memorial Day weekend, they are well behind last year's pace, when they were 29-16 entering the unofficial first mile marker of the season. If they have a turnaround in their bones, then it might come on the back of Juan Soto, who already has nine homers this season — he had six for the Padres in 52 games after his trade to San Diego in 2022.
