Brooks Koepka was the wire-to-wire leader Sunday at Oak Hill, but winning the PGA Championship didn't come easily.

Koepka spent much of the back nine holding on for dear life with Viktor Hovland in pursuit before gaining separation down the stretch.

Two bogeys on the front nine turned a four-stroke lead into a one-stroke edge for Koepka, and Hovland was one stroke behind on the 16th hole when disaster struck. Hovland couldn't clear the bunker, his ball wedging in between the sand in the grass.

It was the same mistake that knocked Corey Conners out of the lead on Saturday, and it ultimately resulted in a three-shot swing Sunday. Hovland made a double bogey while Koepka birdied the hole. It was all a formality from there.

The victory puts Koepka at the pinnacle of golf for the first time since 2019, when he won his fourth major in three years. It was clear when he led the Masters after 54 holes in April that he was going to be a serious contender at majors this year, and he didn't let his Sunday struggles at Augusta knock him off his game at Oak Hill.

There is no understating the significance of Koepka's win. He's now only the third player this century to earn five major championships, joining Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson. Koepka is also now the sixth man to win at least three PGA Championships. He won the event in 2018 and 2019.

Koepka's win is meaningful for LIV Golf as well. He joined the controversial golf tour for a large sum of money less than a year ago, and this victory marks the first major championship by an active LIV golfer.

The PGA Championship has now been won by Koepka as often as it has been won by anyone not named Koepka in the last six years, and he looks like the man to beat entering the final two majors of 2023.

PGA Championship live updates, highlights from Sunday's Round 4

6:35 p.m. — It's OVER! Brooks Koepka with a par on the 18th hole for the fifth major championship of his career. He's one of six men to win three PGA Championships, and he's back on top of the golf world for the first time since 2019.

6:30 p.m. — Koepka is now minutes away from his third PGA Championship, even after a bogey on No. 17.

6:20 p.m. — Scheffler makes his play for second with a birdie on the 18th hole. He finishes 7-under. Not the result he wanted, but a pretty terrific tournament for the 2022 Masters champion.

6:06 p.m. — Hovland has to settle for a double bogey, moving him four shots behind Koepka after a birdie by the two-time PGA Championship winner. He's about to make it three-time. What a swing here on hole No. 16.

6:04 p.m. — A magical weekend for Michael Block ends with a par. And it didn't come easy - it required a tremendous third shot while surrounded by fans. Block finishes tied for 15th and is qualified for the 2024 PGA Championship.

6:02 p.m. — After a long process to figure out where to place the ball, Hovland does what he can with his second shot. Koepka is very well positioned, all of a sudden.

5:56 p.m. — Major mistake by Hovland. He does exactly what Corey Conners did yesterday on No. 16 and fails to clear the bunker. That turned into a double bogey for Conners.

5:53 p.m. — Chants of "Block! Block! Block!" as Michael Block makes his way to the 18th hole.

5:47 p.m. — Two pars on the 15th hole, so it remains a one-stroke margin entering three tough holes. Meanwhile, Scheffler isn't able to pick up a birdie on No. 16 and needs a minor miracle down the stretch. For now, it looks like a two-man race.

5:39 p.m. — A pair of birdies on No. 14. A great putt by Hovland to get to 8-under, but Koepka quickly answers with an easy birdie of his own. Koepka is holding on for dear life with four holes left to play.

5:25 p.m. — Now Hovland answers with a birdie on No. 13! He nearly pulls even with Koepka, but Koepka comes through with a terrific putt for far. It's a one-stroke lead with five to play.

5:20 p.m. — Scheffler is rolling right alone. He birdies again to move to 6-under and into a tie for second with Hovland. We have a three-way race.

5:16 p.m. — Block's reaction was an instant classic. He needed to be convinced it went in. I'd say the crowd's reaction was enough to convince him.

5:13 p.m. — No way! Michael Block drills a hole-in-one on the fly! He hadn't even recorded a birdie all day. What an insane weekend for the PGA golf pro.

5:08 p.m. — The lead is back to two. Kopeka is able to secure a birdie on the 12th hole, while Hovland's attempt misses. It's a two-stroke lead with six holes to play for the four-time major champion.

5:05 p.m. — Scheffler is starting to gain momentum... He's now 5-under after his second bogey of the back nine.

4:55 p.m. — Koepka misses par by less than an inch after hitting it into the bunker. Nice recovery, but the bogey shrinks his lead back to one stroke with seven holes to go.

4:52 p.m. — Rory isn't going away just yet! He birdies the 13th hole to move into a tie for fourth on the leaderboard.

4:46 p.m. — The lead is two again! Koepka birdies No. 10 and is back to 8-under.

4:31 p.m. — Koepka and Hovland both finish the front nine with par on No. 9. The margin is what it was when the day began: One stroke.

4:25 p.m. — Scheffler bounces back from his 9th hole bogey with a very nice putt for birdie at No. 10. He's back to 4-under with eight holes to go.

4:20 p.m. — Koepka's tee shot at No. 9 lands among the spectators... Another door might be open for Hovland here.

4:12 p.m. — Patrick Cantlay with an eagle on No. 14!

4:08 p.m. — A huge birdie by DeChambeau to pull within three strokes of the lead, just as Scheffler bogeys the 9th hole and drops away from the pack.

4:04 p.m. — Koepka and Hovland both bogey the 7th hole, opening the door for Scottie Scheffler (-4)...and maybe more. Hovland misses a big chance to tie this score through seven holes.

3:50 p.m. — Drama at the 6th! Koepka can't overcome his bad tee shot and bogeys what's been the toughest hole on the course. What was briefly a four-stroke lead is now a one-stroke lead over Hovland.

3:36 p.m. — Koepka hooks his tee shot a bit on No. 6, while Hovland's lands in the fairway. The door is open for Hovland to pull closer here.

3:32 p.m. — Here comes Viktor Hovland! After Koepka narrowly misses a birdie at No. 5, Hovland converts and comes back within two strokes of the lead. Next is the vaunted 6th hole.

3:23 p.m. — Jon Rahm overtook Koepka during the final round of the Masters last month. Pretty cool to hear him commentate on Koepka's final round today.

3:20 p.m. — Koepka briefly opens up a four-stroke lead with another birdie, but Hovland follows it up with a birdie of his own. The lead is three.

3:04 p.m. — Koepka is locked in. He begins his day with two birdies in three holes and has opened up a three-stroke lead over Hovland.

2:56 p.m. — A birdie for Koepka at the 2nd hole! The lead is now two.

2:54 p.m. — Viktor Hovland came to play. No birdies yet, though, so he remains behind Koepka.

2:44 p.m. — Kopeka settles for par on the 1st hole, missing a chance to expand his lead.

2:34 p.m. — Tightening on the leaderboard? Justin Rose (-3) birdies the first hole, Victor Perez (-3) earns yet another birdie, and Scottie Scheffler (-2) has himself in good position for a 3rd hole birdie.

2:28 p.m. — Here comes the final pairing of the day... Brooks Koepka is aiming for his first major championship since 2019, while Viktor Hovland is hoping to leapfrog him and win the first of his career.

2:25 p.m. — Really hot start for Victor Perez, with three consecutive birdies on holes 2-4. He's four strokes off the lead at 2-under.

2:17 p.m. — Tough start for Michael Block, who bogeyed the first hole and slid to a tie for 14th on the leaderboard. Bogeys will be more costly today with conditions much better.

2:11 p.m. — Rory McIlroy making an early statement with a birdie on the 1st hole. He's now four strokes off the lead.

1:58 p.m. — Kurt Kitayama is rising with two birdies in his first four holes. He's even par and tied for eighth on the leaderboard.

1:53 p.m. — Michael Block receives a huge ovation as he walks over to the tee.

1:14 p.m. — Cameron Smith has four birdies through his first six holes, moving him into the top-10 at even par. Really impressive day.

12:40 p.m. — A special tournament for PGA Tour pro Michael Block could turn into a truly incredible story today, depending on how high he's able to finish. Block is paired with Rory McIlroy.

12:15 p.m. — If you want an indication of how quickly players might be able to move up the leaderboard today, Chez Reavie is already at 3-under through six while Cameron Smith has two birdies in his first three holes. Better conditions could create some serious movement, even after moving day.
