F1 qualifying results: Starting grid for 2022 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix as Verstappen takes pole position for final race of the season

It was two-time world champion Max Verstappen who dominated qualifying for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix to claim pole position for the final race of the 2022 Formula One season.

The Dutchman - who has already claimed the title this season - led the pack after the first runs of Q3 before he further extended his lead with a perfect final lap when it mattered most at the end of qualification.

Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez finished P2 as the constructors champions recorded their 25th one-two qualifying in their history. That could be vital for the Mexican driver as he looks to beat Ferrari's Charles Leclerc to second spot in the world championship standings for the campaign.

Leclerc and Carlos Sainz took P3 and P4 for the Italian team at the Yas Marina Circuit, whilst Mercedes duo Lewis Hamilton and George Russell came P5 and P6 respectively.

Formula One legend Sebastian Vettel also enjoyed his final qualifying session before he retires from the sport. The four-time world champion dragged his Aston Martin car into Q3 before finishing P9 in the session.

Formula 1 schedule 2022

There are 22 scheduled events on the F1 docket for 2022, one race shy of tying the mark for longest F1 calendar.

The season started in Bahrain on March 20 and will end with the customary Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, although a bit earlier than usual, in November. If the schedule stands, this will be the earliest end of the Formula 1 season since it ended on Nov. 4 in 2013.

Returning to the 2022 F1 slate are the Canadian and Japanese Grand Prix, both of which were canceled in 2021 amid fallout from the coronavirus pandemic.

The calendar also holds the maiden voyage for the Miami Grand Prix, the first of two races in the United States in 2022, with the customary United States GP taking place in October.

The Russian Grand Prix, originally scheduled for Sept. 25, was cancelled because of the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
