Pakistan were unceremoniously ousted from the T20 World Cup 2024 after they failed to qualify for the Super 8 stage as they finished third in their group behind rivals India and co-hosts USA.

The South Asian giants lost their opening two games against the US and India which spoiled their party in the competition and led to their early exit.

Former Pakistan cricket star Shahid Afridi recently took to Twitter to reminisce about the impact of good leadership on a team’s performance.

In a tweet, Afridi highlighted how Younis Khan’s captaincy played a leading role in Pakistan's journey to the 2009 World Twenty20 final. This reflection comes at a time when Pakistan's current cricket team is facing scrutiny following their exit from the T20 World Cup 2024.

Afridi's tweet was a response to a post by cricket journalist Saj Sadiq. Sadiq's tweet reminded fans of Pakistan's semi-final victory over South Africa in the 2009 World Twenty20.

Afridi scored 51 runs off 34 balls and took 2 wickets for 16 runs, including the important wicket of AB de Villiers. Reflecting on that match, Afridi acknowledged Younis Khan's exceptional leadership during a challenging period.

Did Shahid Afridi take a dig at Babar Azam's captaincy?

Taking to X, Afridi wrote,

Even in 2009, the team was unhappy and a bit disjointed after some early defeats. It was Younis Khan's leadership that brought everyone together as we created history! Good leadership can turn around the team in any situation!

Afridi's words underscore a crucial lesson for Pakistan's current cricket team. Good leadership can unite a disjointed team and turn around their fortunes, even in the face of early setbacks. The current Pakistan team, which recently exited the T20 World Cup 2024, has faced criticism for its lack of effective leadership.

The team's inconsistent performances and inability to progress beyond the group stages have left fans and experts questioning the leadership strategies in place. The 2009 World Twenty20 was a memorable tournament for Pakistan.

Despite a shaky start with early defeats, the team rallied under Younis Khan's captaincy. Pakistan's victory in the semi-final against South Africa and their subsequent triumph in the final against Sri Lanka were testaments to the power of strong leadership and teamwork.

For Pakistan to reclaim their former glory, there is a need to reflect on the qualities that made leaders like Younis Khan successful. The team requires a captain who can inspire confidence, build team spirit, and lead by example. Afridi’s tweet serves as a reminder that with the right leadership, any team can overcome challenges and achieve greatness.

As Pakistan looks to rebuild and move forward from their recent T20 World Cup exit, they must seek a leader who can unite and inspire the team, much like Younis Khan did during their historic 2009 campaign.

What next for the Pakistan Cricket team?

The Pakistanis will be back in action in August as they are set to host Bangladesh in a two-match Test series.
