Former Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) team director Joy Bhattacharjya has made a bold claim on Indian skipper Rohit Sharma ahead of the ICC T20I World Cup 2024.

Amid the IPL action, the D-Day is nearing, as Ajit Agarkar and Rohit Sharma are scheduled to meet in Delhi ahead of April 30, to chalk out a 15-member squad for the upcoming ICC T20I World Cup 2024.

Among all the headaches that the selection committee is bound to have to select a squad, author Joy Bhattacharjya has pointed out Rohit Sharma as India's undeserving captain for the upcoming T20I World Cup.

Rohit Sharma's credentials to lead India at 2024 T20 World Cup questioned

Joy Bhattacharjya was very critical about BCCI's (Board of Control for Cricket in India) decision to go ahead with Rohit Sharma as Team India's captain for the upcoming T20I World Cup.

Speaking to Crizbuzz he said,

They hamstrung themselves by appointing Rohit Sharma as India's captain for T20I World Cup. I do not think at this point, in this format (T20), Rohit should be the captain.

The expert further slammed Sharma's form as opener in the T20 format. He added how his fellow competitors were outperforming him in the opener position in the ongoing IPL 2024.

He added,

I have utmost respect for him. I think he is an amazing cricketer. But he is not in a batting form to be an automatic selection for India, the former KKR director stated.

Virat Kohli, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill are in better form than Rohit Sharma, fighting for the opening positions. Because Sharma is the captain, he will open. One of the players will have to bat one position down the order, Bhattacharjya opined.

Additionally, Joy also made an interesting pick for India's captaincy choice ahead of Rohit Sharma. He picked ace speedster Jasprit Bumrah to lead India in the United States of America and West Indies in June 2024.

Captain has to be a sure shot member of the team. I would put (Jasprit) Bumrah as captain (over Rohit Sharma), he concluded.
