Jannik Sinner vs. Daniil Medvedev score, result and highlights as Italian wins Australian Open from two sets down

Jannik Sinner is the Australian Open men's champion after coming back from two sets down to stun Daniil Medvedev at Rod Laver Arena on Sunday night.

After being steamrolled in the first two sets, Sinner fought back to win his first Grand Slam title 3-6 3-6 6-4 6-4 6-3 in three hours and 44 minutes.

It was deja-vu for Medvedev, who also lost the 2022 Australian Open final after being two sets up against Rafael Nadal.

Incredibly, Medvedev is 50 wins, two losses when winning the first set at hardcourt Grand Slam matches, with the only two defeats being in his most recent Australian Open finals.

Despite Medvedev winning the first two sets convincingly, it felt like Sinner was always a chance if he hung in there, with the Italian having six hours less on court going into the final.

Once Sinner broke Medvedev in the 10th game of the third set to snare it, it felt inevitable he would get stronger while his opponent struggled.

It was just a question of whether Medvedev could summon one last charge to get the job done and while he fought valiantly, Sinner eventually overwhelmed him.

Sinner has been in exceptional form at the Australian Open.

He has only dropped one set so far – against 10-time champion Novak Djokovic in a tiebreak – and it is his performance against the Serbian that has placed him firmly as the favourite for the final. 

If he can replicate that showing on Sunday night, he will likely secure his maiden Grand Slam title.

Despite this, it is still a little surprising to see Medvedev as a fairly comfortable bookmakers' underdog. 

The Russian has considerably more experience than his opponent, competing in five Grand Slam finals.

It is a concern, though, that he has lost four of those deciders.

Another major challenge will be competing physically with Sinner – the Italian has spent less than 15 hours on court this tournament, while Medvedev has played for over 20 hours.

If the match goes the distance, can he keep up with a fresh Sinner?

Or can a wily Medvedev hold his nerve and defeat a young gun in his Grand Slam final debut?
