A consequential moment for the future of the NHL hangs in the balance on Tuesday night, when the NHL Draft Lottery will take place in Secaucus, New Jersey.
The 16 teams that failed to qualify for this year's NHL Playoffs will compete in the lottery drawing, which will set the order for the first 16 picks of this year's draft.
There will be two drawings, one for the No. 1 pick, and one for the No. 2 pick. Only the top 11 teams in the lottery are eligible for the No. 1 pick, and a team can only move up a total of 10 spots.
After the two drawings, picks No. 3 through No. 16 are determined in inverse order of the final regular season standings.
The Sharks, Blackhawks, and Ducks have the best odds at nabbing the No. 1 pick; last year, Chicago won the lottery and went on to select Connor Bedard, who had a stellar debut season in which he led all rookies in points with 61.
