For the second consecutive season, the New York Islanders and Carolina Hurricanes will duke it out in a first-round series in the NHL Playoffs.

Last year, the Hurricanes outlasted the Islanders in six games, kickstarting a run to the Conference Finals.

Carolina is set for its sixth consecutive playoff appearance following a 111-point regular season and second-place finish in the Metropolitan Division. They enter the playoffs off a late-season surge, punctuated by seven wins in their last 10 games.

Veteran center Sebastian Aho leads the team in goals (36), assists (53) and points (89). But Aho is also surrounded by formidable pieces, including Trade Deadline acquisition Jake Guentzel.

It has been an eventful season for the Islanders, who benefitted from a mid-season coaching change when Patrick Roy replaced Lane Lambert on Jan. 20. Under Roy, New York posted a 20-12-5 mark, including an 8-0-1 stretch in April that vaulted them into playoff position, finishing in third place in the Metropolitan Division.

A healthy Mat Barzal leads the Islanders with 80 points, while Brock Nelson and Bo Horvat round out a trio of formidable goal-scorers.

The teams split their four matchups during the regular season, with three of the games decided by one goal and two going into overtime.

Here's everything you need to know to watch Islanders vs. Hurricanes in the first round of the 2024 NHL Playoffs.
