The summer edition of the World Juniors is here. The tournament kicked off action with three games on Tuesday, but the home country of Canada debuts tonight with a matchup against Latvia.

Canada comes in with revenge on their mind. They lost in the gold medal game to the USA in 2021, missing out on what would have been the country's 19th gold medal in World Juniors history.

The group in Edmonton is a bit different from the version we saw in December. Notable stars like Owen Power, Shane Wright, Cole Perfetti and Jake Neighbours aren't playing for Team Canada. However, there is still a plethora of talent wearing the maple leaf, as Mason McTavish, Connor Bedard and Kent Johnson get set to lead the way for the Canadians.

Up first for Canada is Latvia, who played on Tuesday against Finland, coming out on the wrong end of a 6-1 game. Klavs Veinbergs had the long goal for the team, while Bruno Bruveris stopped 33 of the 39 shots in the opening game.

Latvia was promoted to the top tournament with Russia's ban from the IIHF. Belarus would have been the promoted team after finishing in first at the Division IA tournament, however they were also banned. With Latvia concluding the tournament in second, they received the bid to move up.

It is the country's first time playing at the World Juniors since 2017 and seventh time total.
