Draft Day movie - NFL

The NFL Draft has arrived, and football fans are ready to rejoice or experience pain, depending on who they root for. Teams can get shaken up thanks to legacy-defining picks this year in Detroit. It can be stressful for everyone, from the front office to those watching at home.

Generally, picks are under wraps until the moment of the draft. What does a team think about as they make a decision that can affect a franchise's future? Thanks to Kevin Costner’s 2014 movie “Draft Day,” there is somewhat of a clear answer.

Costner, known for his many roles in baseball movies, spiced things up by playing Cleveland Browns general manager Sonny Weaver Jr. in “Draft Day”. The movie follows Weaver as he focuses on getting the Browns the best pick possible in the draft. That includes attempting to trade with the Seattle Seahawks for the first overall pick, and the results that come from it.

While the movie goes into the Browns wheeling and dealing for competent picks, it is much more than that, per Costner.

"I think if you want to make a good sports movie, you’ve gotta cut down on the sports," Costner told The Register-Mail. "You have to make it about people. You can’t try to impress people with your knowledge, and all the details, and the technicalities.

"You need to know that some people are gonna sit down and say, 'Why did you bring me to this movie? It’s about draft day [in the NFL]. Don’t we watch football enough? Now we have to on the big screen?'

"Then the lights go out, and the movie begins, and women and men start to see themselves. Yes, there is this backdrop of the NFL, but there’s a lot going on in this movie, and that’s when movies are always gonna be at their best."

The film has a stacked cast that stars Costner, Jennifer Garner, Denis Leary, Frank Langella, Sam Elliott, Chadwick Boseman, Terry Crews, and more. Several NFL stars also appear in “Draft Day.”
