Dalvin Cook injury update: Vikings running back day-to-day with shoulder injury

The Vikings avoided dropping their second straight game with a 28-24 win against the Lions, but they did sustain the loss of one of their key offensive playmakers.

Running back Dalvin Cook left Sunday's contest against the Lions after fumbling in the third quarter when he ran into left guard Ezra Cleveland on a carry. The Lions recovered the fumble, but had to punt on the possession.

Before the injury, Cook had taken 17 carries for 96 yards with a rushing touchdown. Coming into the game, he had 26 total carries on the year for 107 rushing yards. He had also caught seven passes for 37 yards.

At the time of Cook's injury, the Lions had led 24-14.

Dalvin Cook injury update

According to ESPN's Kevin Seifert, Kevin O'Connell said Cook was day to day, but that Cook had already said he hoped to play against the Saints in London next Sunday.

The Vikings announced Cook was ruled out of Sunday's game against the Lions with a shoulder injury.

Cook has dealt with injuries throughout his NFL career. He tore his ACL in 2017, his rookie season, and had a chest injury in 2019. He dealt with a groin injury in 2020 and a shoulder injury in 2021.

Vikings RB depth chart

With Cook out, the Vikings turned the starting running back position over to Alexander Mattison.

According to the Vikings depth chart, Kene Nwangwu and Ty Chandler are the third- and fourth-string running backs, respectively.

On his first full drive, Mattison scored a 6-yard touchdown to cut into Detroit's lead and make it a 24-21 game.
