Tom Brady-Chris Jones trash talk, revisited: Why Chiefs-Bucs could feature a battle of barbs between vets

Chris Jones wants some bang for his buck. Or rather, his bark.

The Chiefs defensive tackle has long been viewed as one of the NFL's great trash talkers, a player capable of riling even the most stoic of opponents.

That reputation came back to bite him last week. With Kansas City leading late in the fourth quarter, it appeared another Colts drive had stalled out after Matt Ryan was sacked on third down.

Jones jawed at Ryan. And although no one — save for Jones, Ryan and referee Shawn Smith — knows what was said, Jones was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Given new life after Jones' miscue, Indy proceeded to score a touchdown en route to a 20-17 win.

The mistake cost Jones and his teammates dearly. And it's one he doesn't intend on repeating. Jones told reporters he took full blame for the incident and said he would avoid saying "anything in the heat of the moment" going forward.

“I kind of put us in a situation to get back on the field, and then we got scored on,” Jones said. “And that sums up the game. So I’ll take that one. It was my fault; it was definitely my fault.”

There's just one problem: the Chiefs' next game is against the Bucs and Tom Brady, one of Jones' greatest adversaries.

The Sporting News chronicles Brady and Jones' history of battling barbs with one another.

What is the history of Tom Brady and Chris Jones' trash talk?

Whenever Brady and Jones meet on the field, sparks — and insults — seem to fly.

If you need evidence of this, look no further than this shouting match that took place midway through a Chiefs-Patriots game in 2019.

In 2020, Brady traded Patriots blue for Buccaneers red. The on-the-field disses to Jones remained, though, as this clip proves:

Football is a game of emotion. Brady and Jones are two of the most emotive players in the league. They were bound to butt heads.

Both players relish these types of intense interactions. Brady offered his view on the verbal back-and-forths with Jones in 2019.

"We were going at it for a little bit. He was pretty talkative out there, so I think there’s a healthy rivalry," Brady told WEEI’s "The Greg Hill Show," per NBC Sports Boston.

I typically don't try to make the D-linemen any more angry than they probably already are with me, because they're the ones that get paid to hit me. So, I don't really give them any incentive typically, but I couldn't really resist at certain points.

It seems there is mutual respect between the two Pro Bowlers. When asked in 2019 about his decision to give Brady a piece of his mind, Jones was complimentary of the future Hall of Famer. In fact, in many ways, Brady's greatness prompted Jones to purp on him when he had the chance.

"Tom is a heck of a quarterback, a Hall of Famer," Jones said. "Any time you're able to talk crap, you've got to affect him any type of way. I got much respect for Tom Brady, man. He's definitely a GOAT in my eyes, one of the greatest. Any time you're able to affect his game any type of way, whether it's talking, whether it's hitting him, whether it's getting him uncomfortable, you got to."

During a 2020 appearance on "Pardon My Take," Jones expounded on letting choice words fly in the face of some of the league's signal-callers

That’s part of the game, man. You know, quarterbacks and D-line, those are two different types of class. So when you’re able to clash up, you talk your (smack). You say how you feel to him. If he on the ground, you call him an old-ass mother . . . or, ‘Get your old ass up.’ (Or), ‘You need to . . . retire.' . . . So any time I’m able to say anything to a quarterback after I hit him — I don’t even have to hit you. I’ll just come to you and talk (smack)."

Will Chris Jones talk trash to Tom Brady during their 'Sunday Night Football' game?

Jones has vowed to not get into it with Brady this week. Jones still doesn't have a clear understanding of what got him the unsportsmanlike conduct flag last week, so he doesn't want to take any risks.

"I will not exchange nothing with Tom," Jones told Kansas City radio station WHB. "I'm not getting no flags, OK? I don't know what is allowed and what is not allowed, so I’m not saying nothing. Listen, it's going to be a clear game. I’m not saying anything."
