Jets GM defends CEO's 'hopefully the team will actually show up' crack to fans

New York Jets

Jets CEO Christopher Johnson didn't exactly make a good impression with fans before Sunday's loss to the Jaguars.

While speaking with a small group of Gang Green, some of whom said they had traveled nine hours to attend the game in Jacksonville, Florida, Johnson was captured on video essentially throwing the Jets under the bus.

"Hopefully, the team will actually show up this week," Johnson said.

The team would go on to lose, 29-15, to the Jaguars after a 33-0 shutout by the Patriots one week earlier.

Jets general manager Joe Douglas, who later learned of Johnson's comments, defended the boss' disappointment in New York's dismal season.

"My take was he seemed like he was a person like a lot of people in this building — passionate and frustrated about where we are at 1-6," Douglas told reporters Tuesday after the trade deadline, per ESPN. "I can tell you my feelings on Christopher haven't changed one bit.

"Frankly, he deserves better than 1-6, and we're going to do everything we can to make sure we're not in this position again in the future."

New York has gone 10-29 since Johnson took control of the organization when his father, Woody Johnson, took an ambassador's post in the Trump administration. Christopher Johnson has fired general manager Mike Maccagnan, and first-year coach Adam Gase is 1-9 in his last 10 games.

The Jets may have their best opportunity to get a win when they visit the winless Dolphins in Week 10.
