David Montgomery suffered an injury in the Bears' Week 3 game against the Texans, and it looks like Chicago will be without him for the rest of the day.

Montgomery suffered knee and ankle injuries during a play midway through the first quarter. He was tended to by trainers on the field and was able to walk to the sideline under his own power.

However, despite Montgomery's innocent-looking exit, the Bears declared him doubtful to return because of the injuries.

Montgomery had 11 yards on three carries before he left the game. He was replaced on the drive by Khalil Herbert, who scored the Bears' first touchdown of the day on an 11-yard scamper.

Still, the Bears will miss Montgomery. He entered Week 3 as Chicago's leader in scrimmage yards by a wide margin. He had 186 in the first two weeks; no other player had more than 84.

So, how will the Bears replace Montgomery? They have a couple of intriguing-looking backups that will get increased work in Week 3 at the least.

Bears RB depth chart

Below is a look at the Bears' depth chart at running back:

Rank Player
1 David Montgomery
2 Khalil Herbert
3 Trestan Ebner
4 Darrynton Evans

The Bears have two running backs active for their Week 3 game aside from Montgomery. They are Herbert and Ebner.

Herbert was the top backup to Montgomery during his rookie season. He generated 433 yards and two touchdowns on 103 carries. In his two starts, he generated 97 and 100 rushing yards, so the Bears can rely on him as the workhorse as long as Montgomery is out.

Meanwhile, Ebner is a sixth-round rookie who has served as a return specialist for the Bears thus far. The 5-11, 215-pound Ebner had a career-best 799 rushing yards during his final season at Baylor, so he will be a solid backup for Herbert.

Finally, Evans is on the practice squad and wasn't active for Sunday's game. The former third-round pick by the Titans has 16 career carries for 61 yards, so he would be the third-string back if Montgomery is out beyond Week 3.
