Texas football is a microcosm of the change college football is undergoing in the coming years. Arch Manning waits in the wings at quarterback, and the team is preparing to abscond to the SEC after this year.
This year, however, things aren't terribly different in Austin. Quinn Ewers will be under center for the Longhorns, and Texas opens its season against an in-state opponent in Rice.
Steve Sarkisian has hopes high in Texas, but everything is yet to come together. Texas went 8-5 last year and lost to Washington in the Alamo Bowl, but it appears to be on the upswing. Optimism ran rampant after Texas took the Crimson Tide down to the wire in 2022, but that success did not translate to the rest of the year.
The Owls are coming off their first bowl game since 2014 and Mike Bloomgren's first bowl as a head coach, thanks to an offense that was largely able to offset a horrendous defense. Rice will look to improve its defense this season, starting against a potent Texas offense.
