Saturday's SEC championship game between top-ranked Georgia and No. 14 LSU has College Football Playoff implications — but only as it pertains to the Bulldogs.

With a win over the Tigers, Georgia will enter the Playoff for the second-consecutive season, this time as the No. 1 overall seed (after making it as a 3-seed in each of the 2017 and 2021 Playoffs). The Bulldogs could even make the Playoff with a loss in Atlanta, though Kirby Smart obviously would prefer not to be at the Playoff committee's mercy.

But there is a chance, however small, that an LSU victory over Georgia — a convincing one — would be enough to sway the committee to remove the Bulldogs from playoff contention. Unfortunately for Brian Kelly's Tigers team, any chance they had of making the CFP disappeared well before the clock hit zeroes in a shocking 38-23 defeat at sub-.500 Texas A&M.

Had LSU won that game, then it could have moved up as high as the fourth or fifth spot in the penultimate Playoff rankings; a win over the No. 1 win in the country at that point almost certainly would have warranted inclusion in the Playoff. Now? LSU is playing for the spoiler and a berth in the Sugar Bowl.

Whether Jayden Daniels, Kayshon Boutte and Co. can penetrate that incredible Georgia defense — or keep up with Stetson Bennett and tight end Brock Bowers — remains to be seen. But the SEC championship game is always worth watching, especially when CFP berths are on the line. Even if it's just for one team.
