NBA Champion 2023 odds: Changes one week after Finals, one day after Draft

A lot has happened in the NBA since the Finals ended a little over a week ago. We’ve seen some trades, including Pistons forward Jerami Grant heading to Portland, as well as some major trade rumors. Atlanta’s John Collins, Toronto’s OG Anunoby, and Spurs All-Star Dejounte Murray, among others, could all be on the move, and it's anyone's guess as to what's going to happen in Brooklyn with Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant. We also had the Draft, which helped improve a bunch of teams. Bettors have reacted to all that "new" information, which is shown by some of the market changes in the odds to win the 2023 NBA Championship.

Which teams have moved the most? Where should you stake some action? We’ll unpack it all and analyze which moves (if any) have turned pretenders into contenders — and which moves bombed worse than a pre-draft Woj tweet.

Sacramento Kings (+100000 to +95000)

The Kings have youth and upside going for them. This franchise is not completely lost, nor does it deserve to be ranked among the worst six teams in the league at this point. Sacramento just used its No. 4 pick to grab Keegan Murray, a floor-spacing, rim-facing, NBA-ready stretch-four who fills the Kings’ most glaring positional hole.

Check out Sac-town's updated rotation:

G De'Aaron Fox G Donte DiVincenzo
G Davion Mitchell G Justin Holliday
F Harrison Barnes F Trey Lyles
F Keegan Murray F/C Damian Jones
C Domantas Sabonis F/C Alex Len

That’s not a bad team, especially with energetic veteran coach Mike Brown replacing the debacle that was Luke Walton and Alvin Gentry (player-favorite Doug Christie will return to the assistant coaching staff, as well).

Kings GM Monte McNair has repeatedly insisted that the Kings are in ‘win-now’ mode, so don’t be surprised if Sacramento makes more personnel changes before October. McNair fetched Sabonis for Tyrese Haliburton and Buddy Hield in a deadline-deal in February and listened to offers for No. 4 before ultimately selecting Murray. This franchise won’t be in immediate contention, but it will at least be in the playoff conversation if it adds one more piece and everyone stays healthy.

Minnesota Timberwolves (+22500 to +6000)

What in the world is happening on the sportsbooks that has Minnesota vaulting up the Finals’ odds boards? Did the nation love Anthony Edwards in “Hustle” that much? Or are the Wolves’ dreams of acquiring Dejounte Murray from the Spurs spilling into the betting universe?

Sure, the Wolves were a lot better than expected last season, and remain a piece or two away from being able to make some real noise in the West. And, sure, Murray appears to be (at least a little) available if the All-Star is retweeting (with popcorn emojis) trade rumors involving himself. A nucleus of Karl-Anthony Towns, Anthony Edwards, and Murray would be quite refreshing for Timberwolves Nation, and it would certainly reinvigorate Minnesota’s title hopes. However, let’s wait to hear if something is actually brewing before we further contribute action to the Wolves’ futures.

Detroit Pistons (+75000 to +80000)

The Pistons just came home from the NBA Draft with stud Purdue guard Jaden Ivey and athletic Memphis big man Jalen Duren. That could easily comprise two of the Pistons’ five starters for the next five years, making Detroit one of the unquestioned winners of the draft.

Ivey and Duren will make life easier on franchise cornerstone and 2021 No. 1 pick Cade Cunningham, and they will also improve Detroit’s efforts to land Phoenix free agent center DeAndre Ayton. The Pistons recently traded Jerami Grant to the Blazers to free up enough space to afford Ayton, and now they have two effective but cheap rookies. This franchise could shape up to be the next rags-to-riches story, similar to the division-rival Cavaliers last season.

Take a look at the Pistons’ potential starting five and bench if they bag Ayton:

G Cade Cunningham G Killian Hayes
G Jaden Ivey G Corey Joseph
F Saddiq Bey F Hamidou Diallo
F Marvin Bagley F/C Isaiah Stewart
C DeAndre Ayton F/C Jalen Duren

That’s a squad that’s well on its way to contention — and one more veteran role player could push it into the playoff discussion. Clearly, the odds shifted after the loss of Grant, but with the recent draft picks and newfound cap flexibility, Detroit could be in line for a big rise. Keep it light if you make a wager with the Pistons, though – they’re still quite young and coming off a 23-59 season.

Portland Trailblazers (+11000 to +8000)

The Blazers have been the most active team in the NBA over the past week or so. They acquired Jerami Grant from the Pistons, surprising plenty of analysts that the deal did not require Portland’s No. 7 draft pick, which turned into stud athlete and playmaker Shaedon Sharpe. More recently, they have been actively pursuing Toronto’s OG Anunoby, another strong two-way wing. This rebuild could be actualized in less time than originally anticipated!

If franchise player Damilan Lillard has Grant, Anunoby, Sharpe, Anfernee Simons, Josh Hart, and Jusuf Nurkic around him, the sky’s the limit for these Blazers. Let’s not forget that Dame is just a few years removed from the Western Conference Finals. I’m quite intrigued by the managerial developments in Portland and think +8000 is well worth a dabble-bet.

Los Angeles Lakers (+2000 to +1700)

The Lakers always find a way to make it into an odds discussion, and why not? They still have LeBron James and Anthony Davis, two top-10 players when they’re both healthy. They are shopping Russell Westbrook, which will likely result in addition by subtraction even if the return haul is less dazzling than LeGM acquisitions of yesteryear. With a little health and a little more roster tweaking, LA should be right back in the mix in 2022-23.
