LIV Golf Boston 2022 results, highlights: Dustin Johnson wins playoff, holds off newcomers

They play 54, but they needed 55 on Sunday afternoon.

Dustin Johnson and LIV Golf newcomers Joaquin Niemann and Anirban Lahiri headed to a playoff hole following 54 holes, with Johnson notching an eagle putt on 18 to give him the win at the LIV Golf invitational at the International.

Johnson's win marked a few different firsts: It was the first win for an American on the LIV Golf series, and the first LIV Golf playoff appearance.

Elswhere, Cameron Smith made a run at the win after joining the tour last week, marking another big-time PGA Tour defection.

The Sporting News provided live updates, results and highlights from Round 3 of LIV Boston below. All times are Eastern.

LIV Golf Boston updates, highlights from Sunday's Round 3

6:42 p.m. FINISH: Dustin Johnson nails an eagle putt for the victory. Clutch shot for the win.

6:39 p.m.: Niemann's fourth shot just passes the cup. He'll likely set for par, as with Dustin Johnson, who has a similar putt up next.

6:34 p.m.: Niemann lands in a bunker on his second shot. Tough shot coming up for his third.

6:31 p.m.: Lahiri's second shot misses the back of the green and hits some rough in front of the crowd. Not the worst shot, but not great, either.

6:24 p.m.: And we're off on the playoff. The 18th hole is repeated until there's an individual winner. Niemann tees off first, and it's into the right. Johnson up next.

6:11 p.m.: We're heading to a playoff: Johnson, Lahiri and Niemann all tied at -15 under.

6:08 p.m.: Lee Westwood botches a golden opportunity to take the lead with a birdie-able hole, but he lands in a bunker and has a long putt to save par.

5:55 p.m.: Lahiri hits the right lip and the putt circles out. Brutal. Finishes the tournament 15 under.

5:48 p.m.: Anirban Lahiri putting himself in position to take the lead with an eagle opportunity. 

5:39 p.m.: Now a three-way tie for first, with Cam Smith making his way to -15. 

5:27 p.m.: Westwood moves into a tie for first with Dustin Johnson, while Niemann moves into a tie for third with Cameron Smith.

5:04 p.m.: Talor Gooch is sitting at -13 for the tournament, after entering the day in first. He's now tied for fourth along with Anirban Lahiri and Joaquin Niemann.

4:54 p.m.: A bogey by Niemann sinks him to two strokes short of the leader, Dustin Johnson (-15). Cameron Smith and Lee Westwood both tied for second at -14.

4:36 p.m.: Dustin Johnson takes the lead, with a long putt on Hole 13 to pin him at -15.

4:09 p.m.: Johnson, Gooch, Westwood all tied for second at -13, Smith joins them at -13 as well.

3:48 p.m.: Smith sits in fifth after a birdie on the par-5. 

3:37 p.m.: Cameron Smith has an opportunity to put himself amongst the leaders with an eagle opportunity. 

3:21 p.m.: Niemann takes the lead at -14, with nine holes to play. 

3:20 p.m.: Johnson's putt hits the left edge and lips out. Can sink the following putt to tie. Gooch up to putt next, and his hits the right edge. Par for the hole, and -13 overall for the day.

3:13 p.m.: Dustin Johnson has a really good shot to take the outright lead after hitting the green on his second shot on Hole 8. Has a chance at eagle.

3:04 p.m.: Niemann and Gooch still tied at the top at -13 apiece on Hole 8. Par 5.

2:47 p.m.: Gooch retakes the lead at -13 under with a birdie at No. 6 — Niemann follows quickly with a birdie of his own. 

2:45 p.m.: Now a three-way tie at the top, with Kaewkanjana crashing the party at -12. Cameron Smith, Dustin Johnson and Pat Perez all sit at -11. 

2:36 p.m.: Tied atop once again: Taylor Gooch drops in a birdie putt on five to tie Niemann once again. 

2:31 p.m.: A quick team update: The Iron Heads (-28) lead the Aces (-27), Crushers (-20), Hy Flyers (-19) and Punch (-19). 

2:27 p.m.: Niemann's tee shot on five lands in the bunker, while Dustin Johnson just splits both. Gooch lands his tee shot short of the green but in a better position than his group.

2:20 p.m.: Cameron Smith with a birdie putt on Hole 7, and he moves up to -9 on the tournament.

2:04 p.m.: Joaquin Niemann takes the lead with a birdie putt on Hole 3, now sits a stroke ahead of Talor Gooch (-11).

2:02 p.m.: Sadom Kaewkanjana is now within a stroke of the lead after notching a birdie putt. 

1:50 p.m.: Gooch just comes up short on a birdie opportunity on Hole 2, but secures the tap in to save par.

1:43 p.m.: Gooch drops a stroke and now there's a two-way tie between he and Niemann after one hole.

1:40 p.m.: Johnson bogeys his first hole of the day. Decent save after a bad tee shot.

1:33 p.m.: Branden Grace's tee shot at Hole 4 lands within 10 feet of the cup. Good shot.

1:28 p.m.: Lead group tees off, and Dustin Johnson's tee shot heads into the crowd. 

1:25 p.m.: Charles Howell III sinks a birdie on No. 5. Good start for him and Crushers GC.

1:16 p.m.: Cameron Smith, in his first LIV event, tees off from Hole 3. He's tied for eighth to start the day.

1:10 p.m.: Only a few minutes until the shotgun start. Interesting dynamic, with Talor Gooch and Dustin Johnson in the lead group today: Johnson is the captain of Team Aces, while Gooch is also a member of the team.

LIV Golf Boston tee times and groups

LIV Golf uses a shotgun start for its events. Players begin at the same time across the course on different holes and move in order from there.
