Boxing fans are ready to see Terence Crawford vs. Errol Spence Jr. in a battle of two welterweight giants in 2023. Before we get there, Crawford must move past an obstacle in his path.

Crawford, the WBO welterweight champion, working on his own after leaving Bob Arum and Top Rank, defends his title against David Avanesyan on December 10. Crawford will be fighting in his backyard in Omaha, Nebraska. The 35-year-old, who has won eight of his last nine fights via KO/TKO, is coming off a year-long break. His last fight was in November 2021 against Shawn Porter.

Suing Top Rank and working on his own to book a Spence match has left Crawford in an unknown position. Still, Crawford is ready for whatever is in front of him.

“David Avanesyan is a good fighter,” Crawford stated at a recent training camp, via Bad Left Hook. “He’s on a good winning streak, and beat a guy in the U.K., in Josh Kelly who people thought was going to be a star. I have to train like I am facing King Kong on December 10th, because Avanesyan has everything to gain and nothing to lose. I know he is going to bring everything on December 10th, so I’m not looking past him. This will be the best Avanesyan, so I have to be the best Terence Crawford.”

Avanesyan, 34, is riding a six-fight win streak after losing to former Crawford opponent Egidijus Kavaliauskas in 2018. A former interim WBA welterweight champion, Avanesyan is ready to defy the odds, literally and figuratively.

“This is a good opportunity for me, a good fight,” Avanesyan stated to Fight Hub TV. “I deserve this fight... This is not an easy fight for Terence for fans that understand boxing.”

Will Avanesyan play spoiler, or will Crawford earn another dominant win? The Sporting News is here to give some insight on how to bet on this welterweight title match.

Terence Crawford vs. David Avanesyan prediction, best bets

Let’s talk about Crawford’s ring savviness, shall we? Crawford is ranked sixth among active fighters with a +13.5 +/- rating. He connects on his shots 34.7% of the time, while his opponents land the seventh-fewest shots per round with 7.5.

Adding onto that, Crawford can control a fight like no other. He can adapt well to any situation. Against Kell Brook (per CompuBox), "Bud" landed 36 of 111 shots (32.4%), with double-digit blows coming late in the fight. He knocked Brook out in the fourth round.

In his last fight against Shawn Porter, Crawford landed 98 of 328 shots (29.9%). Crawford out-jabbed Porter (33 of 159: 21% to Porter's 12 of 94: 13%). Porter controlled the early parts of the fight, and then Crawford woke up. He landed double-digit blows three times from the sixth to the tenth. Once he realized how close the bout was, Crawford attacked Porter to the point that Porter lost his first fight via TKO.

Avanesyan is not Porter or Brook. However, he is a pressure fighter and disciplined. He is also motivated to beat a world champion after failing to win the WBA welterweight title in 2017. The European welterweight champion is on a six-fight win streak and is known for being Shane Mosley’s last fight, a loss.

The odds are justifiably favorable for Crawford, as he has a five-inch reach advantage. However, as he looks for a fight with Errol Spence Jr., Crawford must not get cocky against Avanesyan. Staying focused has never been an issue for Crawford, but he must prove that and make a major statement as 2022 dwindles.

With a year away from the ring, Crawford may be rusty. With his skills, that should not stop him from taking down Avanesyan, which should allow him to focus on 2023 and making history.
