Michael Conlan vs. Karim Guerfi

When featherweight contender Michael Conlan climbs between the ropes to face Frenchman Karim Guerfi at the SSE Arena in Belfast on December 10th, he’ll be laser-focused on producing his very best performance.

In August, the Belfast-based technician bounced back from a heart-breaking 12th-round stoppage defeat to Leigh Wood to outclass three-time world title challenger Miguel Marriaga. Cheered on by a fiercely loyal home support, Conlan displayed all the attributes that have made him a star: speed, movement, angles, and ring IQ. The result was a wide 10-round unanimous decision.

“I think now that I’ve lost the ‘0’, it’s a good thing because there isn’t any pressure on me to stay undefeated,” said Conlan (17-1, 8 KOs) in an interview with Top Rank during the summer. “Now, I just want to fight everybody and anybody. I have a different type of hunger than I didn’t have before. And if I go back to my amateur career, before I’ve hit the top, there’s always been some kind of adversity. Every setback has made me a better fighter.”

Guerfi (31-6, 9 KOs) is a former European champion at bantamweight. Like Conlan, the 35-year-old is an efficient boxer-mover with clean technique and intelligence. A professional for 16 years, Guerfi will be looking to capitalize on this opportunity and stake his own claim for a world title shot.

He's not to be underestimated, as Cambridgeshire’s Jordan Gill can attest.

In February, when Guerfi ventured to London to take on Gill, he was a big underdog and perceived to be a steppingstone. The visitor almost tore up the script. In a wild seventh round, Guerfi decked Gill heavily, then illegally wrestled him head-first to floor. With his eardrum perforated and his equilibrium completely gone, Gill was forced to fight out of his own corner for almost five minutes before producing the miraculous. Guerfi released a combination and was caught on the counter by a massive right hand to the chin. The fight was waved off without a count.

While Guerfi lost that fight, he proved that he’s more than capable of producing a scare. He’ll be hoping for a reversal of fortune in Belfast and the pro-Conlan crowd is unlikely to faze him.
