Erling Haaland and Phil Foden fired hat-tricks as Manchester City put together an astonishing 6-3 derby-day demolition of Manchester United.

Haaland made Premier League history as the first player to score a hat-trick in three consecutive home games, following his heroics against Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest.

This one will live longer in the memory, while boyhood City fan Foden also completed his claim to the matchball after Antony's fine strike briefly eased the pain of United's 4-0 halftime deficit.

Substitute Anthony Martial restored a measure of pride with a late brace, his second coming from the penalty spot, but it remained a local affair where this Haaland-embossed version of City were able to move one point behind leaders Arsenal and strike fear across the Premier League and beyond.

The 22-year-old now has a scandalous haul of 17 goals in 11 City games but he was peripheral in the early penalty-box action, with Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva having early goalbound efforts blocked before the latter delivered a pinpoint eighth-minute cross for the unmarked Foden to gleefully convert.

United carried a threat on the break but were careless in possession and flimsy in defence — a dire combination when a player of De Bruyne's pedigree can pick out Haaland to head home a 34th-minute corner before producing a trademark curling delivery for the striker to steal in behind Raphael Varane for a sliding finish.

City's fourth brought the Etihad Stadium to the brink of bedlam a minute before halftime, with De Bruyne scything through midfield and finding Haaland pulling out to the left flank. His first-time reverse cross found Foden, who capped a wonderful move.

United's first goal also came in stylish fashion as Antony followed up his debut strike against Arsenal by curling beyond Ederson from 25 yards.

It merely served to shake City out of their early second-half slumber, with Haaland fizzing Sergio Gomez's drilled cross past the helpless David de Gea before laying on Foden for a similarly emphatic treble-sealing goal.

Guardiola's perfectionist side will bridle at how Martial was able to convert a rebound after Ederson saved from fellow substitute Fred, before drawing a clumsy foul from Joao Cancelo and converting from 12 yards. Nevertheless, it was a day for uninhibited celebration on the blue side of Manchester.

Hyperspace Haaland marks his turf in Manchester

As his father Alf-Inge Haaland applauded in the stands, enjoying his son's hat-trick, it should have been easy to grasp for a cinematic narrative. Haaland Sr never completed another top-flight game after being on the end of Roy Keane's X-rated challenge during a Manchester derby that finished 1-1 at Old Trafford in April 2001. On Sunday, his old nemesis was left to work through his now-familiar frothing indignation act regarding the latest United humiliation.

But such concerns feel like a parochial footnote given where it looks like Haaland is heading and how he is redefining perceptions of what goalscoring feats might be possible in England's top flight. He has 14 already this season, double the amount of Harry Kane, who is next in the top-scorers charts. Haaland is also the fastest player to three Premier League hat-tricks, having chalked up his treble of trebles in eight games. He unseats Michael Owen, who did it in his 48th appearance.

He became the first City player to score a derby hat-trick since Francis Lee in 1970 for good measure. It feels like most of his records might end up with ample daylight behind them.

Away-day blues send Ten Hag's Reds back to the drawing board

There was an unlikely piece of symmetry when Erik ten Hag brought on Luke Shaw with Manchester United 4-0 down at halftime. It was the England left-back's first Premier League outing since he was substituted at the interval at Brentford, when Manchester United were 4-0 down. They have made strides forward since that chastening experience in west London, but their derby-day humiliation marked the seventh time they have conceded four or more away from home in a Premier League game over the past 12 months.

One of those came in a 4-1 defeat to City in March. Ralf Rangnick's United actually played well in the first half then before downing tools. Players belatedly picking up tools at 6-1 when their hosts have clocked off in celebratory mood is certainly different if not better.

City are a few levels above their neighbours right now and games like this will not be used as the main barometer for Ten Hag just yet. However, the disjointed attacking efforts with and without the ball before halftime, a flimsy and overrun central midfield and a defence reduced to Sunday League shambles on Foden's hat-trick goal are all things that will need to be fixed irrespective of the opposition.

Foden should shift the Alexander-Arnold-Southgate discourse

Polarised and entrenched discussions about the England national team before major tournaments are a dubious part of the enjoyment. After Euro 2020's multi-part series of "Pleeeeaaaase pick Jack Grealish", we now have "How do you solve a problem like Trent Alexander-Arnold?". "He can't defend!" "He can defend!" "It doesn't matter about his defending, he's amazing!" And so on, and so on.

The thing is, Gareth Southgate not knowing how best to use the Liverpool full-back and/or not being so inclined to find out does not feel like so much of a problem when Reece James, Kieran Trippier and Kyle Walker — injured in this derby — are around. Not having the best plan for Foden might just be a bigger issue.

The Three Lions are blessed with a clutch of excellent creative attacking midfielders but Foden, with his sublime technique, capacity to thrive in tight spaces, destructive range of passing and — as he showed against United — eye for goal stands apart. To use the very vogue phrase, he is a generational talent. If England see more of this Foden, Qatar 2022 could be a lot of fun. The fact they haven't since his two-goal home debut against Iceland in 2020 should be causing Southgate plenty of head-scratching.

Fulltime: Nine goals, two hat-tricks, a merry old riot of a Manchester derby. City with Haaland in tow are absolutely terrifying at times. United will probably take a little comfort that this didn't end up getting much worse, weird as that sounds. Thanks for being with us today.

90th minute+1: GOOAALLL!!!! Martial (pen)!!!

Beautifully done, side-footed into the top corner. United do deserve some credit for keeping going. They also deserve pelters for going 4-0 and 6-1 down, so there is that.

90th minute: Penalty to United. Clumsy challenge from Cancelo on Martial, who has grabbed the ball.

89th minute: This has started to feel like a training match, specifically one involving the Brazil national team. Casemiro sends a stinging strike towards goal that Ederson pushes clear.

86th minute: Antony tries his luck again but this one is regulation for Ederson.

85th minute: Palmer looks for Alvarez in the area as City get back on the front foot. Martinez is able to smuggle behind.

84th minute: GOOOAAAALLL!!!! Martial!!!!

Martial adds to him impressive personal history in this fixture, beating Ederson from close range after the City goalkeeper parried Fred's strike. City switched off entirely there.

80th minute: To the surprise of absolutely no one, Bruno Fernandes is in a mood and has been booked for dissent. Martinez then takes a hack at Haaland. There could be further silliness to come from a badly bruised United.

77th minute: There's been a flurry of substitutions. From a United point of view that means Cristiano Ronaldo won't have the indignity of having to be involved here. Foden has departed to a heroes' reception, with Alvarez and Palmer on and keen to play their part in extending the mayhem.

72nd minute: GOOOOALLLLL!!!!! Foden

Double hat-trick joy for the boyhood City fans. United have players back but none of them seem especially inclined to do much defending. Haaland finds Foden, who clatters past the helpless De Gea.

67th minute: Sancho should have done a lot better there. Gomez played him onside but the winger's touch scooted out for a goal kick. The Etihad Stadium celebrates with a Poznan.

64th minute: GOOOAAALLLL!!!!! Haaland!!!

Half a warning and there's the hat-trick. De Bruyne and Grealish combine in the build-up, Gomez just stays onside and his cross is crashed home by the man of seemingly every moment this season.

63rd minute: City back from their slumber. Gomez is involved in a nice move, with United allowing far too much room between the lines. Silva slides a pass for Haaland, who thumps into the side-netting at the near post.

59th minute: Double change for United, with Martial and Casemiro coming on for Rashford and McTominay. Another goal and maybe we see Ronaldo???

57th minute: That's very panicked from City all of a sudden. Gundogan sends a lively backpass to Ederson, who volleys the ball skywards. The danger passes but Guardiola will be very unhappy with these past few minutes.

56th minute: GOOOAAALLL!!!! Antony!!!!

Ooof, that's spectacular. From absolutely nothing, United have a lifeline of sorts. Gomez lets Anthony cut in on his left foot. It looks like there's little danger but he unleashes an unstoppable strike from 25 yards.

51st minute: It's been a quiet opening to the second half after that half-chance, which is at least nice for those United fans who have dutifully opted to remain in the ground.

46th minute: Shaw's first involvement is to get mugged by Foden, who thumps goalwards right footed. De Gea completes a regulation save to deny him his hat-trick.

46th minute: We're back underway and Shaw is on for Malacia. For fans of symmetry, he's not played in the Premier League since being hooked when United were 4-0 down at Brentford.

Halftime: Well, for all that United's recent recovery promised something competitive, they've had an absolute hiding from a team that are levels above. Guardiola might start thinking about resting players for Copenhagen's visit on Wednesday, which was not the halftime thought I expected to be leaving you with.

45th minute+1: Sky Sports are showing United fans leaving the stadium. Alex Ferguson is in the stands looking like he'd quite relish giving the team talk Ten Hag is about to tackle.

44th minute: GOOOOAAAALLL!!!! Foden!!!!

Luscious, ludicrous, liquid football from Manchester City. United's threat on the counter-attack was supposed to be a factor today and they've been ripped apart by one. De Bruyne storms through midfield threads it down the left for Haaland, who arrows a ball back across goal for Foden to finish.

42nd minute: Haaland into space, finds Grealish. Strangely, the master poacher doesn't appear to be expecting the return pass and prods wide.

40th minute: Sergio Gomez is on for Walker, with Cancelo switching to right-back. If the game was more in the balance, Guardiola probably would not allow himself the luxury of throwing on the Spain Under-21 international.

39th minute: Fernandes thumps a shot from 30 yards. Ederson catches it. City fans guffaw. In news that will amuse them less, Walker's afternoon appears to be done.

37th minute: GOOOOAAAALLLLL!!!! Haaland!!!!

Make that 16! De Bruyne strides through midfield. He's sort of in that right channel he likes but it's still a pass he has no right to make. Varane, who left the pitch and returned to the eye of a hurricane can do nothing as Haaland slides in behind him to extend City's lead.

36th minute: Kyle Walker is off the field after an awkward landing. City will hope there's nothing serious there. That was Haaland's 15th goal of the season, by the way. It's October 2. Entirely normal behaviour.

34th minute: GOOOAAAALLLLL!!!!! Haaland!!!!

One of the things to recommend about this United display was they were keeping Haaland quiet. Ah, well. Varane was off the field for treatment when De Bruyne's corner came in. Perhaps he'd have dealt with Haaland. A combination of Eriksen (!) and McTominay certainly didn't and his near-post header was over the line before Malacia intervened.

32nd minute: Foden spanks a shot that leaves Varane down on the ground. Grealish skips past the besieged Dalot and De Gea saves well. The United keeper then tips over a long-ranger from De Bruyne.

30th minute: A rare period of controlled possession in City territory for United. The ball is worked out to Antony, whose cross to the back post scoots out for a goal kick.

28th minute: Fernandes pressers rabidly after Walker strokes a pass across the City defence to Ake, who has to go all the way back to Ederson. No real danger that time, but that's definitely something United are looking to pounce on.

23rd minute: McTominay plays an utterly honking pass straight to Grealish. He dribbles into the United box and McTominay is one of the crisis management team that manages to avert the danger. Rashford then takes his turn to give the ball straight back to City, Foden runs Malacia and both United full-backs are now on yellow cards.

21st minute: Foden inches away from his second. Silva enjoys himself down the United left again. His cross doesn't reach Haaland but causes panic anyway. Foden lashes just beyond the top corner. Guardiola thinks he should have done better.

20th minute: De Bruyne's cutback is cleared out of the six yard box by Martinez with Haaland lurking.

18th minute: Off the post! Gundogan launches a sumptuous effort, curling around the outside of the United wall. De Gea is a spectator as the ball cannons away off his left upright.

17th minute: Grealish is swaggering his way through the opening stages. He dribbles inside and draws a crude foul from Martinez. De Bruyne and Gundogan like the look of this one on the edge of the D.

16th minute: More slack work at the back from City, but that allows Akanji to dump Rashford on the seat of his shorts, much to the delight of the locals.

15th minute: An untimely slip by Walker gives United half an opening. Sancho finds Eriksen, whose shot under pressure from Gundogan is easily gathered by Ederson.

13th minute: Rashford goes hearing off behind the City backline but Ederson is out in a flash to clear.

12th minute: Dalot, who is on thin ice, gets one-twoed by Grealish and conceded a free-kick in a dangerous position. United get the ball clear as much by accident as by design.

11th minute: Fernandes tries to fashion a United response and finds Rashford. His first touch lets him down and Gundogan gets back to hack clear with his first telling piece of defensive work in this deeper role.

8th minute: GOOOAAAALLLLL!!!!! Foden!!!!!!

The Manchester man makes the breakthrough on derby day. That passage of play began with Grealish playing a horrible pass across halfway. Akanji had to tidy up by winning a  50-50 on Sancho. There was no such decisive defending from United as Foden darted into the area unaccompanied to emphatically finish Silva's cross. That's his 49th City goal and first in the derby.

6th minute: Silva gets down the left again amid suspicions of offside. Grealish tries to fashion a one-two with Haaland but the return pass goes out for a goalkick.

3rd minute: Somehow City don't lead. Grealish slips a pass beyond the now compromised Dalot. Silva hangs up a cross for Haaland, his header is blocked, De Gea thwarts De Bruyne from the rebound and Silva has his own strike blocked in the goalmouth.

2nd minute: Well, that's daft. The second foul of the game sees Diogo Dalot get himself a very early yellow card for blundering into Jack Grealish on the left.

1st minute: A first touch for Haaland, if anyone's playing that game. The City striker drags Varane back into his own half and wins a freekick. 

1 min from kickoff: Blue Moon now being belted out, final formalities being attended to. Both teams are wearing black armbands following the football stadium tragedy earlier today in Indonesia.

5 mins from kickoff: The teams are in the tunnel and noise is rumbling around the Etihad Stadium. It's almost time.

15 mins from kickoff: Our man Joe Wright is at the ground today. He's complaining about the bright clothes the young people are wearing.

20 mins from kickoff: Dias joined City two years ago this week. He has been a transformative signing and Guardiola's decision to bench him will get plenty of post-match focus if United are triumphant. But the Portugal international is not playing at the imperious level that saw him quickly become City's defensive leader, while Akanji and Ake have both been in fine form. Additionally, a lot of pace against this United forward line when there is Rodri for screening cover makes sense. Even so, file Guardiola's picks for his starting centre-backs under "big call".

40 mins from kickoff: It's certainly an early plus for Ten Hag that all the pre-game talk centres on the City XI. He has the luxury of being able to field a winning team once again with the minimum of fuss. Among other things, that shows he has quickly won the argument over Ronaldo's reduced role. Still, it would be a brave person who bets against CR7 coming off the bench to make an impact if this one remains in the balance with 20 minutes to go.

1 hour from kickoff: That's confirmed then, no Rodri for City. Perhaps more intriguingly, Ruben Dias is only on the bench alongside the returning Aymeric Laporte, with Nathan Ake partnering Manuel Akanji at centre-back.

United are unchanged from their previous Premier League outing against Arsenal four weeks ago. That means Marcus Rashford is fit to start

1 hr 10 mins from kickoff: The all-important team news will be with us in about 10 minutes. Jack Grealish has been spotted doing some pre-match media duties, so he's starting for the hosts. One reason for that might be the seeming absence of Rodri from the City squad that got off the team coach a few moments ago. If the Spain international is out, expect Ilkay Gundogan to slot into his role at the base of midfield, with Grealish and Phil Foden flanking Haaland in attack.

1 hr 30 mins from kickoff: It's tricky to know quite what to expect from United today, largely because they haven't played a Premier League game for almost a month. They turned their form around very impressively following a dismal start to life under Erik ten Hag, winning four in succession. That run includes home wins over Liverpool and Arsenal but

City's title defence has started without them completely hitting top gear but avoiding the sort of turbulence that has beset expected challengers Liverpool and Chelsea. Then there is Erling Haaland plundering goals all over the place and relishing his first taste of this fixture.

Man City vs. Man United lineups

John Stones suffered a hamstring injury playing for England against Germany on Monday and misses out. Aymeric Laporte is back on the bench following knee surgery, with Nathan Ake preferred to Ruben Dias to partner Manuel Akanji at centre-back.

Rodri is the standout absentee for City due to a calf problem, with Ilkay Gundogan filling in at the base of midfield.

Ronaldo is joined among the substitutes by Facundo Pellistri, who makes a Premier League squad for the first time. Harry Maguire (knee) is out.
