Cowboys forward Luciano Leilua charged by police over alleged incident

Cowboys forward Luciano Leilua has been charged by police following an alleged incident on Monday. 

The 26-year-old signed with North Queensland mid-way through the 2022 season, but had returned to his home in Sydney following the club's exit from the finals. 

Leilua has been charged with common assault and damaging or destroying property. According to The Daily Telegraphthe incident involved a woman known to the Cowboys star.

The club released a statement on Monday night confirming the news.

"The North Queensland Cowboys have been made aware of an alleged incident regarding player Luciano Leilua, which has resulted in police charges," the statement said. 

"The club is gathering further information and assisting the NRL Integrity Unit as well as providing support to all parties involved.

"Further comment will be made in due course."

Leilua was set to play for Samoa in the upcoming Rugby League World Cup, but is scheduled to attend Campbelltown Local Court on October 11th. 

The second-rower has played over 100 NRL games to date across stints with the Dragons, Tigers and Cowboys.
