Ranking the worst buys in NRL history
Most new signings are met with joy, excitement and expectation by NRL fans.
Maybe your club's getting a gun fullback, or last year's Dally M prop of the year.
Perhaps you're signing a lethal winger, or the missing piece of your side's back row puzzle.
Either way, when your club makes that big announcement, there's a certain amount of pressure and expectation on the player involved.
Sometimes it works out, but there are plenty signings that have gone the way other way.
These are some of the worst signings in the NRL era.
Honourable Mention: Sam Burgess - Rugby union
Remember when Sam Burgess went to union for a little bit?
That was weird.
Matt Orford - Raiders
The 2008 Dally M Medal and Premiership winner moved back to the NRL in 2011 after a stint in Super League.
Raiders fans were hoping he would be their saviour after an injury to Terry Campese, but the former Manly star failed to fire.
He played six matches in the nation's capital and lost them all before groin injury ruled him out.
Glenn Stewart - Rabbitohs
One of several players on this list who was great at the Sea Eagles, but didn't find form after moving clubs.
Stewart switched to the Bunnies to replace Sam Burgess, who'd jumped codes for a stint in rugby union.
The style and approach was completely different to what he as accustomed to and he asked for an early release to play in the Super League.
Anthony Watmough - Eels
It wasn't so much that Watmough's form turned to custard after joining Parra, it's just that constant injuries kept him from performing at his very best.
The Manly legend was forced into retirement after just one season of his four year deal completed at the Eels.
Jono Wright - Warriors
Sometimes a club buys a player who fails to live up to lofty expectations.
Other times a club will sign a bloke for no ungodly reason.
This was one of those times.
What were the Warriors thinking?
Corey Harawira-Naera - Bulldogs
CHN was actually a decent signing for the Bulldogs last year, playing well and earning a Test call up for New Zealand.
But he has since been de-registered and kicked out of the game for his part in the Bulldogs' pre-season sex-scandal.
Chris Sandow - Eels
The electrifying playmaker joined Parra on a reported $550,000 a year, but spent plenty of time in his first season in reserve grade.
He eventually did find some form in 2014, but he would be playing in Super League shortly after that.
Zak Hardaker - Panthers
Named the Super League's Man of Steel in 2015, Hardaker made the move Down Under for 2016.
In stark contrast to the likes of Sam Burgess, Josh Hodgson, James Graham and Adrian Morley who all had stellar careers after signing from England, Hardaker struggled.
He played just 11 games at the back end of the 2016 season and crossed for a solitary try.
Kieran Foran - Warriors
It was a tough couple of years for Foran...
The Kiwi Test player signed with the Warriors to form one the most exciting halves pairing in the league alongside Shaun Johnson, but it never got firing.
Foran finished that season with 17 games under his belt for a win percentage of just 29.41% - the lowest of any season in which he's played at least 15 games.
Darius Boyd - Knights
Boyd had won a premiership at his previous two clubs under Wayne Bennett, and there were high hopes the pair could repeat the magic in the Hunter.
A 2013 appearance in the prelim final was as close as they got, before both moved back to Brisbane, where they made a grand final in their first season.
Kade Snowden - Knights
The front rower was touted as one of Wayne Bennett's marquee signings in the Hunter, and he was paid a massive amount of money to leave the Sharks.
Unfortunately, he never reached the same heights, and wasn't selected for New South Wales or Australia again after moving to Newcastle.
Chris Walker - Rabbitohs
WALKER'S ON! WALKER'S ON! WALKER'S ON...HODGO PASS IT ON!
Chris Walker had a great career, winning a premiership ring at the Broncos and playing six Origin matches for Queensland.
But Walker was most definitely not on during his brief stint at the Bunnies in 2003.
He played just five games before walking out on the club and joining the Roosters.
Adam Blair - Tigers
The Tigers unloaded a fair bit of talent to sign Blair from the Storm.
One of the most destructive runners in the game at the time, a raft of off-field issues meant he never fulfilled his potential at Wests.
He left after three seasons and immediately re-found form at the Broncos.
John Hopoate - Tigers
Hoppa was a bona fide star when he signed with the Tigers in 2000.
But after a poor first season, his second ended prematurely when he...ahem...well you know.
Kieran Foran - Eels
It was a huge story when Foran left Manly to join the Eels for the 2016 season.
It looked promising for a little while, with the playmaker scoring six wins in nine appearances.
But it all came undone with a season-ending shoulder injury, personal issues and a fallout with the club.
Reni Maitua - Sharks
He could'be been anything at Cronulla following his sacking by the Bulldogs, but Maitua played just eight games for eight losses at the Sharks in 2009.
He was then banned for testing positive to performance enhancing drugs.
Karl Filiga - Sharks
What a tale.
Karl Filiga - "the next Sonny Bill Williams" - left the Bulldogs for the Sharks on a reported $600,000 deal in 2008.
He played a total of 11 minutes in the NRL before leaving on compassionate grounds.
Martin Kennedy - Broncos
Went to the Broncos on a big-money deal after huge success at the Roosters.
His career in Queensland never kicked off and he was soon back at Bondi Junction.
His second stint in Tricolours didn't last long though as he was sacked and banned for doping offences.
He was last spotted in court when he pleaded guilty to illegally importing and exporting exotic wildlife.
Ben Barba - Broncos
The 2012 Dally M medalist moved north with huge expectations on his shoulders, but failed to deliver in his one and only season at Red Hill.
After taking the Bulldogs to the Grand Final in 2012, Broncos fans will still be fuming that his one season at the club produced no results, before he returned to Sydney and won a comp at the Sharks.
Jarryd Hayne - Titans
Hayne returned to the NRL after stints in the NFL and Rugby Sevens, with the Titans reportedly offering a $1.2 million contract.
There were some positive signs on his return in 2016 - a match-winning field goal against the Tigers was one - but the following season was a disaster.
Hayne and then coach Neil Henry had a falling out, with the coach eventually shown the door.
He then decided to re-join the Eels in 2018.
Sam Tomkins - Warriors
Tomkins was one of the best players in Super League when he signed a massive money deal to join the Warriors in 2014.
Sadly for fans across the ditch, the English fullback just wasn't cut out for life in the NRL.
Quick, but too small, he was often injured and ended up asking for a release on compassionate grounds in 2016.
