Picking an all-time rugby league goal-kicking XIII

Goal kicking is a super important part of rugby league, and it is often the difference between winning and losing the game.

Over the years we have seen some remarkable sharp-shooters such as Hazem El Masri and Jason Taylor.

In more recent times, Johnathan Thurston and Cameron Smith have proved integral with their goal-kicking and have shattered records.

So with no live sport, we thought now would be a good time to narrow down the best goal-kicking team of all-time.

A lot of the players pick themselves, while others required a bit of digging.

See below for our all-time rugby league goal-kicking team.

1. Graham Eadie

1. Graham Eadie

Career goals: 847

'Wombat' was a legendary player with the Manly club in a career that spanned 237 games.

Eadie represented NSW on 14 occasions and Australia 20 times, and ranks just ahead of Rabbitohs legend Eric Simms as the all-time leading goalscorer at fullback.

He held the record for most points ever in a first-grade career until Mick Cronin broke it in 1985.

Honourable mentions:

Eric Simms

Keith Barnes

Clinton Schifcoske

2. Hazem El Masri

2. Hazem El Masri

Career goals: 891

The Canterbury fan-favourite is arguably the best pure goal-kicker in this side.

'El Magic' finished his career with 81.97% goalkicking in 317 games for the club.

His record of 2,418 for most points in an NRL career still stands to this day, with Cameron Smith still 200 points behind.

Honourable mentions:

Michael Gordon

Luke Burt

3. Mick Cronin

3. Mick Cronin

Career goals: 865

The Parramattta legend dominated through the 1980s when the Eels were the team to beat - and his goalkicking played a big part in that.

When he retired, Cronin held the record for most points in first-grade history with 1,971.

He went on to coach the side between 1990-93, but the success wasn't quite the same as when he was playing.

Honourable mentions:

Graeme Langlands

Jamie Lyon

4. Jarrod Croker

4. Jarrod Croker

Career goals: 750

The current Raiders skipper has emassed an incredible career since debuting for the club in 2009.

His 2,008 career points is the most in club history and is in the top 10 of all-time.

His accuracy is incredibly strong as well, currently sitting at 80.13% for his career.

Honourable mentions:

Ryan Girdler

Steve Rogers

5. Darryl Halligan

5. Darryl Halligan

Career goals: 855

Another Bulldogs player in this side, Halligan revolutionised goalkicking by changing from a sand mount to a plastic tee - something that is nowadays commonplace.

His career percentage of 79.31% is also very strong, and he sits at 6th for the most points in history.

Halligan also represented New Zealand on 20 occasions, and since retiring has become a commentator.

Honourable mentions:

Steve Gearin

Matthew Ridge

6. Johnathan Thurston

6. Johnathan Thurston

Career goals: 923

The future Immortal was a classy kicker on his day, and could bend and curve the ball in between the posts like nobody we have ever seen.

While his career percentage is under 80%, he sits in third place on both the all-time goalkicking and pointscoring leaderboards.

Thurston's most famous moment off the tee is probably him missing a kick in the 2015 Grand Final - but he made up for it moments later with a golden-point field goal.

Honourable mentions:

James Maloney

Jamie Soward

7. Jason Taylor

7. Jason Taylor

Career goals: 942

The former Bears playmaker has the second-most goals in first-grade history - but his percentage is actually surprisingly low.

Taylor operated at 75.24% during his 276-game career - a lot lower than someone like Adam Reynolds who sits at well over 80%.

But his name sits high in the all-time leaderboards, so he deserves his spot at halfback - for now.

Honourable mentions:

Adam Reynolds

Andrew Johns

Matt Orford

8. Corey Parker

8. Corey Parker

Career goals: 586

Though he only played 29 games at prop during his illustrious career, Parker slots in here due to the fact goal-kicking props are few and far between.

The Broncos legend holds the record for the second-most career points for a forward in a career that spanned 347 games.

Parker's overall percentage was quite low, only operating at 72.52% during his 15 seasons.

9. Cameron Smith

9. Cameron Smith

Career goals: 1,216 (most ever)

This is the easiest pick of the entire team.

Smith has the most goals in history, and is closing in on Hazem El Masri's all-time points record as well.

His career percentage is just under 75%, but he can get away with it considering all the other records he holds.

Honourable mentions:

Mark Riddell

Issac Luke

10. Sio Siua Taukeiaho

10. Sio Siua Taukeiaho

Career goals: 40

Definitely the least amount of goals in this side, but a fine player who has shown he can be a sharp-shooter when called upon.

Taukeiaho is one of the best props in the NRL today, and operates at over 72% accuracy - not a bad for a big fella!

11. Craig Fitzgibbon

11. Craig Fitzgibbon

Career goals: 718

The former Roosters stalwart was one of the great goalkickers during his time playing between 1998-2009.

Fitzgibbon holds the record for most points and most goals by a forward in competition history, so his selection is an easy one.

He now works as an assistant coach at the Roosters and a head coach role doesn't seem too far away.

Honourable mentions:

Bernie Purcell

Rhyse Martin

12. David Furner

12. David Furner

Career goals: 511

The Raiders legend sits third on the all-time pointscoring leaderboard in terms of forwards with 1,218.

His career percentage however was quite low at 65.26% and he only just edged out Bernie Purcell for a spot in the 13-man side with only 64 more points to his name.

Furner of course went on to coach the Raiders between 2009-13.

Honourable mentions:

Ethan Lowe

Gavin Hill

13. Wayne Bartrim

13. Wayne Bartrim

Career goals: 489

The former Broncos and Dragons forward emassed a solid career in the 1990s, and represented both QLD and Australia.

Bartrim finished his career with a sucess rate of just under 70% before moving to Castleford.

Admittedly, he did play a lot of his career at hooker but goal-kicking forwards are hard to come by and he deserves a spot in the side.
