Manzoice has sprung a shock at the spring racing carnival after beating the short-priced favourite Sharp N Smart on the line.

Manzoice displayed a superior staying performance to triumph over Sharp N Smart, with the Kiwi appearing as if he had the race wrapped up with 100m or so left on the straight. However, the outsider charged home in the final stages to claim a momentous victory.

Mick Dee completed an incredible ride, coming from the midfield before blitzing the outside as Sharp N Smart and Aberfeldie Boy just couldn’t quite match the pace.

Earlier in the day at Flemington, Argentia claimed the Paramount & Rising Fast stakes, with jockey Damien Oliver guiding the mare to outlast Triple Missile.

Short-priced favourite Surefire claimed the Lexus Archer stakes for the sixth win of his career to date. However, it was the second-place finisher who took the headlines after claiming a spot in the Melbourne Cup.

Serpentine will boost Lloyd Williams’ chances of winning an eighth Cup next week, after Chris Waller opted some time ago to not race Surefire in Tuesday’s big race. It is believed the rise in distance will suit the six-year-old Serpentine.

The win for jockey James McDonald started an incredible day, as he claimed four of the first six races.

He steered Zennzella to victory in the Racing & Sports Wakeful stakes and Old Flame to the Linlithgow stakes, with the pre-race favourite Turaath proving disappointing.

Zennzella fought off Pavitra in a close battle down the straight, while Old Flame reeled in the early pace-setter Poland for a comfortable win. While In Secret proved far too strong in the Coolmore Stud stakes.
