Melbourne Cup 2022 tips, runner-by-runner preview

Historically the hardest race to back a winner in each year, we've put in the hard work so you don't have to.

This writer has tipped the winner in two of the past three years - Vow And Declare (2019) and Verry Elleegant (2021) - and we are hoping to find one in 2022 as well!

Overseas runner Deauville Legend looks set to start favourite, with no other horses rated at single-figure odds. Montefilia, Realm Of Flowers and Without A Fight have all received support in the market however.

Let's take a look over each runner and try to find the winner.

1. Gold Trip - Originally from France, the six-year-old has linked up with the successful Maher/Eustace stable since arriving in Australia earlier this year. Has been in sound form leading up to the race, finishing a close second in the G1 Caulfield Cup and third in the G3 Naturalist Stakes. A blip on the radar in the G1 Cox Plate over a shorter distance shouldn't impact his chances in this race. Gold Trip has produced just one win during his career in a G2 event in France, and will enjoy this distance. The one query is the fact he must carry the top weight of 57.5kg. Certainly among the main chances in the race.

2. Duais - The early favourite for the Cup, Duais has fallen out of the market and is now at much bigger odds than previously anticipated. The mare has struggled this preparation, failing to place in any of her starts. That being said, the five-year-old showed in autumn just how classy of a horse she is, winning the G1 Australian Cup and G1 Tancred Stakes. After finishing off well in her last start in the G1 Caulfield Cup, she could be set to peak here and despite recent form, Duais cannot be discounted.

3. Knights Order - One to look out for if there's rain about in Melbourne, with an impressive record on heavy going. The gelding took out the G1 Sydney Cup earlier this year over the same distance and has been racing consistently well during this preparation, finishing third in the G1 Caulfield Cup and winning the G2 Chelmsford Stakes. The eight-year-old will be right in the mix, with the wide gate only a slight concern.

4. Montefilia - A four-time Group 1 winner, Montefilia comes into the race in solid form and will be at her peak for the Cup. Trainer David Payne has gradually increased the distance for the mare this preparation, going from a mile up to 2000m, before finishing just a length of the winner in the G1 Caulfield Cup. Being forced to carry 55.5kg is a tough ask for the mare in this race, which may be the only possible query. Arguably among the best horses in this race, could we see class prevail similar to Verry Elleegant last year? There's a very good chance we will.

5. Numerian - A solid run in the G1 Caulfield Cup, finishing fifth and just 1.2 lengths off the winner. The gelding also finished second in his previous two starts this prep and relishes at longer distances. Looks to be over the odds and a genuine place chance.

6. Without A Fight - Many are fancying the overseas star to aim up in the Cup. With seven wins from 17 career starts, he is a proven winner who could certainly trouble this field. Last raced five weeks ago, finishing second in a Listed race at Newmarket in the UK. In the hunt for this race.

7. Camorra - A previous Group 2 winner in Ireland. Will be having his first start in Australia, having not raced for 51 days since finishing in eighth spot in the G1 Irish St Leger Stakes. Wouldn't surprise to see the five-year-old run a place in the Cup.

8. Deauville Legend - Looms as the horse to beat and the market reflects that. The lightly-raced gelding has three wins and three placings from seven career starts to date. A smart overseas stayer that already has Group-level success early in his career. Will be fighting it out at the very end and will look to become the first favourite to win in almost a decade.

9. Stockman - Deep into a preparation, taking out the St Leger Stakes at Randwick two weeks ago and producing some solid outings prior. Will be on the quick back-up after running in the Rosehill Gold Cup this past Saturday, finishing eighth over 2000m. Came home strongly to finish seventh in the G1 Sydney Cup over this distance earlier in the year. Drawn a low gate but would need to improve.

10. Vow And Declare - The 2019 winner of the Melbourne Cup, but hasn't won a race since. Looks to be back near his best during this spring carnival, producing a couple of solid runs in the G1 Caulfield Cup and G3 Bart Cummings, so he must be respected. Not without a chance to become a two-time winner.

11. Young Werther - Finished 10th in the G1 Cox Plate and third in the G1 Turnbull. Enjoys the longer trip and will be able to stay the distance, that much we know for sure. Has been trained specifically for this race and if it gets some luck in transit, it could be thereabouts. The gelding will need to overcome a wide draw, but could run a drum if he's at his best.

12. Hoo Ya Mal - Another highly-rated overseas prospect. The three-year-old has a strong career record, boasting two wins and six placings from just nine starts. Has had almost two months away from the track after finishing second-last in the G1 English St Leger Stakes in September. Has every chance and will relish at this distance.

13. Serpentine - On the quick back-up after finishing second in the G2 Archer Stakes on Derby day. Had the blinkers on for the first time for that race and improved on previous efforts. Would need a lot more improvement and has drawn a tough barrier.

14. Daqiansweet Junior - One of the only horses in the race to win over the 3200m trip, taking out the G2 Adelaide Cup earlier this year. Hasn't exactly set the world on fire this preparation, but will be fresh after a month-long break. Place chance at best.

15. Grand Promenade - Finished sixth in last year's Melbourne Cup, but was in considerably better form. Finished fourth in his last start in the G2 Moonee Valley Cup, but will be against tougher opposition here. One of the outsiders of the field and looks unlikely.

16. Arapaho - Has been racing well, finishing second in the Randwick St Leger Stakes in his last start and taking out the G3 Premier's Cup back in August. Soft track could work in the gelding's favour, but a win would be a major surprise.

17. Emissary - Won the G3 Geelong Cup last start, a race which has produced three past winners in this race. Has been going steadily and draws nicely. Each-way chance.

19. Smokin' Romans - Started as the favourite in the G1 Caulfield Cup, but disappointed after finishing in seventh spot and 2.3 lengths off the winner. Prior to that, the six-year-old gelding took out the G1 Turnbull Stakes in dominant fashion, as well as the G3 Naturalist Stakes. Willing to forgive the recent run and looks a good each-way chance on Tuesday with Jamie Kah in the saddle, looking for her first Melbourne Cup win.

20. Tralee Rose - Finished in ninth last year in the Melbourne Cup. Has been in poor form this preparation, finishing 13th in the G1 Caulfield Cup and last in a Listed race prior to that. Probably making up the numbers in this field given her recent form.

22. High Emocean - Carrying the equal-lowest weight with just 50kg. Won the G3 Bendigo Cup last start and is in winning form this preparation. Would need to improve further, but not without a chance of placing.

23. Interpretation - Hasn't gone terribly this preparation, finishing third in the G3 Bart Cummings and sixth in the G3 Geelong Cup. Still in the infancy of its career in Australia and shouldn't be discounted in this race.

24. Realm Of Flowers - Performed well over this distance in the past, finishing fifth in the G1 Sydney Cup this year and narrowly missing in a Listed race earlier in her career. Finished third in the G1 Metropolitan Stakes over 2400m a month out from the Cup, which was one of her best performances to date. Hasn't raced since the Metropolitan, but did win a trial two weeks ago over the mile and will be reasonably fresh. With a low weight on her back and a lovely draw, this race looks well within the mare's grasp.

VERDICT: While there are plenty of great chances in the race, we have narrowed it down to four runners. Deauville Legend is a deserved favourite and will be factoring into the finish. Gold Trip and Numerian will be looking to improve on strong showings in the Caulfield. However, our final selection is Montefilia - arguably the best horse in the race and will be at her peak for the Cup.

FINAL TIP: Montefilia ($10 win/$3.20 place with TAB). 1-4-5-8 Exotics
