It is also far from an exhibition event, with $260,000 prize money on offer at this year's meet.

Where are the Birdsville Races held?

The annual event takes place in Birdsville, Queensland.

Located close to the Northern Territory and South Australia borders, it is a rural town situated in the Shire of Diamantina.

Fans, trainers and horses travel from all over Australia for the event, which is headlined by the Birdsville Cup.

The track itself is 2000m in circumference, with the longest race - the Birdsville Cup - held over 1600m.
