Nathan Lyon has spun Australia to victory on the fifth day of the first Test against West Indies in Perth.

Australia won by 164 runs in the end, bowling West Indies out for 333.

Lyon finished with 6/128 from just shy of 43 overs to help the hosts to a victory over a West Indies side which showed plenty of fight.

Part-timer off-spinner Travis Head also collected two wickets, while skipper Pat Cummins didn't bowl at all as he nurses a quad injury.

The Aussies may play it safe with the captain for the second Test in Adelaide ahead of a big series against South Africa later in the summer, although Cummins is keen to play.

"I got a little bit of a tight quad. It got a little bit tighter, I was going to have a bowl but luckily it didn't get too close," Cummins said post-match.

"It feels fine, just trying to be a little bit protective, obviously got the Adelaide Test in four or five days, hoping to be available for that."

Batter Marnus Labuschagne was named man of the match, having scored 308 runs across the two innings.

West Indian captain Kraigg Brathwaite top scored for his side in the second dig, posting 110, while Roston Chase (55) and Alzarri Joseph (43) provided some resistance on Sunday.

Cummins was pleased with the contributions across the board from his team.

"The way the batters set up the game, relentless, really put some overs into their bowlers," Cummins said.

"When I was down, the way the other quicks stood up, Nathan Lyon loves bowling here, fantastic all-round performance.

"I always say he's the most important bowler in our team, bowls bulk overs, takes important wickets and keeps the economy down.

"There wasn't a lot on offer for spinners today but he found a way."

The second Test gets underway in Adelaide on Thursday.
