Controversial outside the ring, Jared Anderson looks to let his fists do the talking in it. "The Real Big Baby" headlines a show in Corpus Christi against Ryad Merhy on April 13. The fight airs on ESPN+ in the U.S.

A two-time U.S. National Championship gold medalist, Anderson signed with Top Rank in 2019. The 24-year-old beat Vladimir Tereshkin for the NABF heavyweight title in 2021. He outpointed Charles Martin via unanimous decision in July 2023, the first time he went the distance. In his last fight in August, Anderson beat Andriy Rudenko via TKO.

Before the fight, Anderson got involved in a police chase that saw him going about 130 MPH. He also improperly handled firearms while knowingly under the influence in a separate incident. Detractors believe he is not serious about boxing or being a role model to kids.

Despite his legal issues, Anderson is moving forward, regardless of how controversial the situation.

"It's not really gonna derail my career. It is just an eye-opener to make me push harder," Anderson told ESPN. "When you see my performance April 13, just know that you won't have anything to worry about. I'm always training, even when people wanted to try and tear me down and say that I wasn't focused. Even when I did have that incident, I was still training... I think I'm just getting started. I barely scratched the surface so far. I'm really ready to get to the next level."

Merhy turned pro in 2013. The 31-year-old failed to capture the WBA cruiserweight title in 2018 against Arsen Goulamirian but won the interim belt in 2019 against Imre Szello, eventually getting promoted to full-time champion. He got stripped of the title after refusing to face Goulamirian, among other contenders. Merhy last fought in December, beating Tony Yoka via decision.
